Has anyone adapted Firefly for Traveller (or visa versa)?

Seem like it'd be a natural fit. Matter of fact after I saw the first episode, I was struck by how familiar it seemed when compared to some aspects of a Traveller campaign I played in when I was stationed in Germany back in the 80's.

Other than adapting the Traveller Jump Drive into something usable by Firefly, and building the galaxy, should be fairly simple.

Figuring out how big Serenity is in Traveller terms is a bit tough. I am guessing that the shuttles are about 15 dton each. If you figure that 10 dtons is equivalent to a semi trailer, how many of these could you squeeze into the cargo bay of that ship?

I think there's more than a hint of it there, yes - after all, the pilot has a line "Welcome aborad, travellers", which always made me wonder if it was an in-joke - maybe Joss used to play Traveller.

And Serenity is certainly the closest thing to a 200-tonne tramp freighter (like Traveller's 'Beowulf' class) I can imagine...

The GURPS version of Traveller also has the 'Vehicles Expansion 2' supplement available which contains a starship engine which seems pretty close to the 'Firefly Drive'.

Yep, Beowulf or maybe the Empress Marava.

Will have to look for that GURPS supplement, thanks for the tip.

Head on over to the RPG.NET forums, do a search for "Firefly", and you'll see a lot of discussion on adapting traveller for Firefly (as well as using other RPGs).

And you're right, it fits (almost) perfectly: the low-tech environment; the tramp freighters drifting from world to world, making money by means both legal and not; the large, impersonal government that is not exactly evil but not good either, etc.

While doodling around on some of the Traveller sites I visit, I found this:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/andyslack/pdf/imperium.pdf

Its an article about the Traveller Imperium, by Andy Slack. His opening quote I think says it all.

"Wash, where is my damn spaceship?"

I ran a Traveller/Firefly game a while back. My big problem was adapting FRL technology. Since it's not clear if Firefly takes place in one star system or many, it may be possible to bypass the tech entirley.

Other than that, it worked pretty well.
