Did The X-Files go down the tubes somewhere in it's nine-year running time?

I'm a former X-Phile and I'm wondering if anyone else thinks that the show suffered a serious downward trend in quality during it's later years.
After all, the show had nine years in which to run, yet they filled it out with unnecessary and gratuitous violence and sickness (e.i., the ep where Mulder and Scully meet the incestuous Peacock family ), and they squandered good characters (Alex Krycek, Cancer Man and the entire Syndicate) by killing them off/ressurrecting them at strange intervals. Got any comments on this?

Total concurrance... not to mention the ending extremely REEKED.

Cancerman was an awesome, awesome character, especially since when filled out and shown to be a human being, although one with serious issues and no real life... he was MORE, not less, scary.

The irony of him protecting them from worse was lost on most of the Faux audience, I guess.

I figure they sexed it up and dumbed it down for the typical Faux audience... and you don't EVEN wanna get me started on that note...

I thought there was some merit to the X-Files all the way to the end, but it's hard to argue that the last three seasons were as good as the prior ones. The show was weakened by the growing disinterest and eventual absence of David Duchovny, and by the fact that Chris Carter ultimately had no meaningful answers to the questions he had spent years setting up.

I watched The X-Files from the very beginning and I actually liked many of the later episodes.

I really liked the character of John Doggett - and I enjoyed the show when they got back to doing stand-alone episodes with him and Scully investigating unexplained cases.

What I didn't like so much were the big arc stories, as I thought these sometimes went on for way too long and got way too complicated. Loved Krycek though!

And I didn't like the final episode much either - I don't think it really resolved things, especially for the Doggett and Reyes characters.

Book: “A duel?”
Wash: “With swords?”
Simon: “The Captain's a good fighter, he must know how to handle a sword?”
Zoe: “I think he knows which end to hold.”

Yep, it went down the tube with season 8 & 9. NOT because of Doggett and Reyes, who I liked, but because they screwed over Mulder & Scully and extended the conspiracy storyline far past its due by date.

Seasons 1-7 were classic. Some people don't like 7; it was different, but still brilliant. 8 & 9 just rehashed old stories in an average manner, and the conspiracy storyline went nowhere. There were some decent standalones in 8 & 9, though, but the finale of Season 7 was Citizen Kane compared to the *actual* (grumble, grumble) finale of the series, which was barely adequate.

In addition to Joss Whedon and Babylon 5, this is as good as tv gets, IMHO.

And there was nothing wrong with "Home", the incestuous episode you noted. Gruesome, but one of Glen Morgan & James Wong's most interesting hours. Which reminds me to muse over when the Millennium DVD will come out. :)
