I'm doing a research paper for english class about Simon's sacrifice for River in relation to other sacrifices in literature.

That's pretty general, what have you read in said class? and can it be linked to ANY literature or does it have to be from a certain time period or certain place? With that info I think I can help.

Alright back in the day I read great expectations. In that book the convict (Provis or Magwitch) gave up all he had for pip to go on and become a gentleman. He worked hard all his life and gave freely all his money (much in the way simon did) to get pip to become something better than he was. Toward the end of the book Provis then comes from his prison colony (under penalty of death if found) to see how Pip has grown. Provis is found and tries to escape with Pip's help but is caught by authorities during which he is badly injured. He is taken to jail and ultimately sentanced to death, but dies before he can face the excecutioner. I'm sure you can find your own paralells (think of the BDM when you're writting as well especially for the end comparison) http://www.bookrags.com/notes/gex/PART56.htm
there's a link to a brief outline of the entire book part 56 is where the convict dies.

You can also compare it to Romeo and Juliet who basically risk it all and give up their lives to be with each other against two families who say it isn't right, but this is more of a romantic love where as Great Expectations is more of a general love for another. You can also use Great expectations to say that the convict "saved" pip from a life of poverty where Simon saved River from a life of pain and torture...Let me know how it goes and if you need more help.

One more thing I just thought of Pip trying to save the convict from being captured toward the end is much in the way River saved Simon at the end of the BDM so you can also talk about how the saccrafices were reciprocal.

I think Simon's sacrifice is best understood as like the commitment someone makes when they become a priest or monk. Giving up status, money and material possessions for an austere existence committed to [River, in this case, not God]. Until five minutes to go in the movie, he remained celibate, too!

If you need to drag out a paper you could talk about what this means as far as River being godlike.

I don't know about literay parallels, but I'd revisit "Safe" once or twice. I think the flashbacks are key. I don't know what kind of dads you fellas had, but the way he stood up to his own dad impressed the hell out of me. Remember, he didn't just give up material wealth and comfort for a loved one, he gave up a job he loved dearly, and he knew he was going to be ostracized by others he loved.

In "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", Huck rejects the conventions of his society in order to help Jim escape slavery. A parallel could be drawn there.
