I have a few questions regarding the uniforms of the Browncoat regulars in the pilot episode: In a few shots it almost looks like Mal, Zoe and the rest are wearing some sort of chain mail under their brown uniforms. If it's not chain mail it sure does look like something metallic. Does anyone know what this stuff is? And also: does anyone have any information on what the uniforms of different Alliance military ranks look like, and what the differences are in the insignia and whatnot? Some high-quality stills would be a big help.

I don't know from insignia, but I'm fair certain that the Alliance uniforms are the same ones from the movie Starship Troopers. That should provide you with plenty of material detail if not an Alliance rank structure.

How could we determine Alliance rank and insignia? Seems that they're divided into two categories so that the ground guys (the fine young Alliance federals of "The Train Job") wear the infantry armor style uniforms while the bureaucrats on the sailing cities (like the Dortmunder and and others) wear the more formal suit style uniforms that were pilot dress in Starship Troopers. On the ships themselves there might be a funny hat system (tangentially-- anybody else notice the huge number of references, both visual and spoken in the whole of the series?) but since there's little address other than "Sir," I'm not sure it could be figured out.

The Alliance uniforms are the same ones from "Starship Troopers"? Guess I'll have to buy the DVD. Fun flick, even if it was silly and none-too-faithful to the original book, which in my opinion is a masterpiece. Thanks.
