I am watching "Objects in Space" as I write this, and I just realized that Simon sees Shephard Book lying there and goes to check on him and asks Jubal if part of his plan was beating up a Shephard, Jubal says:
"That ain't a Shephard."

Am I reading to much into that, or is that giving us a little more insight into Book? Does Jubal know him previously? Or is it just crazy Jubal Early talk?

Give me your thoughts, Browncoats!

GUTTERBALL

Ah, but if you notice, even the craziest Jubal Early talk had relevance. Much like River's babbling -- huh, and ain't that a pretty pun? -- is usually relevant in a poetic, metaphoric sort of way.

I took it to mean that Early knew something that we didn't. In fact, the first time he said that, I just rolled my eyes and asked my roommate, "Does everyone BUT the crew know Book??"

What happened? He see your face?

Yeah, I think he knew all along.. and that is why Jubal sneak attacked Book and not the others...

Many have said he was tracking them since Ariel because you see his ship fly by in Trash.. So, maybe he did some research

My hope is that Book was part of the alliance and had some sort of rep...
Not necessarily and operative…

If you listen to Joss' audio commentary for that episode, he specifically mentions that line. He describes Early as being "intuitive almost to the point of being psychic," and that the comment wasn't based on any previous knowledge of Book, but rather what Early intuitited of him based on just his brief spying on the crew.

Anyone ever heard why Joss chose the name Jubal Early ?

I know he had been reading an American Civil War novel (Killer Angels, I think ??) - and anyone who knows the Civil War would recognize Jubal Early as a Confederate General ... Why Jubal Early ?

First, the book WAS the Killer Angels and its the best damn civil war...scratch that...war book ever written. It won the pulitzer for Shaara, inspired my dad to become a soldier, and inspired the greatest tv show of all time FIRFLY!!! Its a must read for every browncoat.
Second, I know of two possible reasons why they named Jubal, Jubal. I've heard its because someone on the Firefly cast/crew was related to him somehow or other but i like my theory better. I originally thought it was supposed to be Irony because in the series he is working for the alliance whereas the real Jubal Early fought for the confederates, lost(duh), and then ran off to south america(the outer rim?) because like Mal, he still wasn't convinced it was the wrong side. Heres the kicker, he wrote a book titled "A Memoir of the Last Year of the War for Independence, in the Confederate States of America." THE WAR FOR INDEPENDENCE!!!!!! INDEPENDENCE!!!
Coincidence? I think not.

WHITEFALL

I just started reading the Killer angels, actually.... looking forward to finding out what's there...

Anywho... I think that, in accordance with Joss' word, Early is just an exactly bounty hunter, to the point that he watches how book moves, what he says, and maybe even the way he fell, which would tell you, this guy was a professional, and no matter what he is now, Early sees it as 'once a always a ', so he sums it up as "That aint a shepard."

Fanwank? a little, but i think this is how he knew.

I survived a day in Whitefall and all I got was this lousy signature!

I believe it's in the commentary somewhere that Joss says Jubal Early was a relative of Nathan's, in the civil war.
