Hey Guys

I see some major problems with most of the scenarios I’ve had the opportunity to review on this site that are designed to breath life back into our beloved Firefly as a series. While all are very good intentioned, there is some flawed thinking that often puts the cart ahead of the horse. I offer this feedback having worked in the commercial finance business for over a dozen years, having underwritten and raised several million $$ in capital for many a worthy venture.

My thoughts are these:

The very first hurdle is this; does Joss and Chris in fact want to assemble, as much as is possible the original production team, cast and crew, writers, etc. to produce “Firefly” as a weekly series. Or are we all just kidding ourselves. There are only so many irons a person can have in the fire at one time, and Joss has other projects in the works.

Almost just as important is the issue of who actually owns/controls the various components of the “Firefly” intellectual property.

And I won’t elaborate too much at this point, but everybody seems to be thinking about structuring the deal backward. I suspect the economic feasibility exists. If that is in fact the case, we don’t have to have the tail wag the dog. It’s only after all the data is available, can an analysis be done to determine a deal structure that is viable. We don’t want to have any potential false starts with “one step forward, two steps back”, because of a plan that is conceived with only half the facts.

All major players involved will want to know, “what’s in it for me”. You often only get one shot at “the Pitch”, so it damn sure better be right the first time. If the numbers are flawed, then the whole deal will be perceived to be flawed.

If the all of the “Powers That Be” are all willing to be reasonable, and equitable then a deal could be structured and terms reached that would benefit all parties. Unfortunately the greed issue is so pervasive within the entertainment industry that seldom do reasonable people prevail. That’s the only reason why I hate entertainment deals; nowhere else on the entire planet are people so full of themselves as they are in this business.

And these things usually take more time than we hope. I suspect even if a primary suitor came to the table right now that was willing to champion Firefly, it would be at least six months before pre-production could commence.

I think everyone should just continue the new recruit campaign, and just stand-by for action when the word come down. Make sure that any action involving structuring a deal is initiated by folks that have the authority and where-with-all to actually make the deal happen. When the “Red Button” is pushed once will be our queue!

But hey, I’d love to see it happen and there are MANY ways that it can. It’s all about people’s willingness to be reasonable. We’ll see how this all pans out over the next few months. Here’s hoping for a “Shiny” resolution to our current state of “No Firefly” induced depression.

We’re still flying guys, so hang tough!
