First time poster, but long time reader!

A question for all you knowledgeable people:
In the outtakes of Serenity, after flubbing lines, a number of the actors (Nathan and Morena, i remember most clearly) say, "Summer!"

What's the deal with that?

From what I can gather, it's an inside joke that got started when they were filming the episode " Objects in Space". As they were doing the long shot at the end where we see each character interacting with another successive character on thru the ship, Summer would goof it up at the very end and they'd have to film again. So.... they got in the habit of blaming her... even when it wasn't her fault! So it's now their kinda byline when they goof up and of course that carried over into the movie.

It's a running joke that the cast and crew have. It's mentioned in the commentary for one of the Firefly episodes (can't remember which one at the moment, sorry) that whenever something went wrong on set, everyone would blame Summer.

"Invader's blood marches through my veins like giant radioactive rubber pants. The pants command me! Do not ignore my veins!"

At the end of the episode Objects in Space there is one big take that includes all of the actors, meaning any time one of them got something wrong they'd have to do it again.

Summer was at the end, so if she got a chance to mess up it meant that everyone else had done perfectly and she screwed it all up.

One time that she messed up Nathan yelled, "Summer!" in either mock anger or real frustration. The very next take he screwed up right at the beginning, and instead of taking the blame he yelled, "Summer!" in mock anger.

Since then every time something went wrong, even if Summer wasn't on the set, they would blame her. So when something goes wrong they yell, "Summer!"

During the taping of "Objects in Space," the final scene is a long SteadiCam shot through the ship. Summer was at the very end of the shot and at least a couple times she messed up, causing everyone to start from the beginning of the shot. Nathan Fillion would be the one to rub it in her face, shouting "Summer!" whenever she messed up.

As it happened, Nathan (who was near the beginning screwed up his own line. In response, he shouted "Summer!" blaming her.

Ever since, whenever someone would screw up they'd often blame Summer, even if she wasn't on the set.

I can't believe how quickly I got an answer!

I just bought my Firefly DVD set and haven't had a chance to watch the commentaries with the episodes, so thank you to everyone who responded!
