First off, I should say hello and introduce myself. My name is Josh and I just recently got hooked into Firefly. I was an occasional viewer of the show on Sci-Fi and Fox but never really got into it till Serenity (and I assume I'm not the only one). I was sick this past weekend and one of my friends suggested I watch the series. So I did and I watched them all (all 15 episodes this week, 13 of which being back-to-back).

However, I had watched a downloaded copy of Serenity (telecine) prior to watching the series and it was so average and I had to see it in theaters (also to support the series). I knew it was a long shot but I decided to drive to one of the 3 theaters in my area showing it still. I figured I would be pretty much by myself in the theater. However, this was not true. At the end of the movie, in the smallest theater in the place, I got up and there were about 20 people behind me. I was shocked, honestly shocked. I just chalked it up to the dedicated fanbase.

Now, I only have one real question (which I'm sure has been covered). This should contain spoilers for both the show and the movie.

Select to view spoiler:

In the begining of the film, they show the Tams escaping up and out of the facility via a ship. But in the show, they explain that Simon had River cryo-freezed to get her out of the facility and onto the Serenity. Are we just supposed to believe that she was frozen after they got off the lift? Or is there a distinct break in the storyline between the show and movie (doubtful). Just wondering...

Anyways, I honestly hope that someone at one of the corporate TV channels sees the greatness of the Firefly universe and continue to the story (as it is a great one)...I'm officially hooked

UNREALCITY

Yup, I'm also a relatively new convert.

I saw the movie for the 5th time a week ago and was shocked to see at least 50 people in the theater and, as you noted, quite a few "new viewer" sounds coming out of people.

Unfortunately, I think this week is the last week in the theater I went to--the movie times aren't listed past Thursday.

I should also note that my son talked a friend of his into going. Although I had to drive him to the theater, he wouldn't let me stay to see the movie. I thought it was the typical "Geez, Dad, leave me alone" thing--it would have been for me--but it turned out he was trying to catch up to my viewings.

At least, that's what he said.

Welcome to the site, Lax01! Always glad to have new browncoats on board. And nice to hear that about the theater--every penny counts. Now, as to your spoilery question:

Select to view spoiler:

We are meant to believe that River was frozen later and that she and Simon were deliberately separated for the trip to Persephone. This makes some sense; the Alliance would be looking for two people fleeing together and that is not so. Simon's story to the crew in the pilot is vague enough for wiggle room--and he might not have been telling the truth to this pack of strangers who'd threatened his life.

It should be noted that one of the main reasons the whole escape sequence was drawn up that way was to rapidly introduce new viewers to the two characters, their relationship to each other, and their predicament. It is expedient for the story and doesn't quite break with canon--some fine writing by Joss.

Anyway, that's my take on it. Please, do stick around on the site and discuss the 'verse with us. I, too, am hoping for more of the 'verse in live action, but it looks like that's going to depend on the Serenity DVD sales, so be sure to buy a copy or three when they come out (December 20) and recommend the film/show to all your friends.

Stay shiny!

thanks for the responses...I guess that makes enough sense...though I thought it might confuse some new viewers in the fact that

they might think that the ship that helped extract them was Serenity (and not some other random ship...I assumed this the first time I saw the movie which is why I wondered when I started watching the series)[/spoilers]

anyways, thanks again, and I definitely think I'll stick around as this place seems active enough to keep me awake during class ;)
