MISGUIDED BY VOICES

Some seem to be suggesting that Jayne is out of character in the movie, as compared with Jayne in the series, but I don't see it.

1) The dialogue. Some of the stuff he says ("in earnest") has been suggested to be too smart for Jayne - but I don't recall that he was ever dumb. He knew what he knew, and sometimes that made him smart, sometimes stupid. Besides, certain expressions that aren't used much and so seem archaic, snobbish or "smart" now would be used by all in the past.

2) His decision on the Reavers - not actually out of character at all. Jayne has a moral code that the series showed, and a fear/hatred of Reavers shown in the pilot - not much of a leap to say that to discover that the government made the Reavers would register for him at a moral level - especially when his friend Book had just died for that. Not even a hop, barely even a skip.

There was only one moment where I didn't like how the character was written as against how I saw them - when Kaylee asked what a safe word was. It seemed like it was something added in for fear some in the audience would miss it - not sure how though. Better to have had Simon explain and Mal to tell him he knew what he meant.

Other than that, these people seemed to be where they might have been 8 months from when we had left them. Simon was more confident, Book was at peace, Inara had left - Mal had got darker and that was having a serious ripple effect on everyone else on the ship.

The problem is, we didn't get to see them get there after 8 months worth of episodes, and its up to us to take some of that journey ourselves.

Correct me if im wrong, but aren't those comic books suppose to be the ties in those 8 months? I haven't got them yet, but im planning on it.

The comics explain a bit, and you definitely see a shift in Mal, Simon, and Book to something that's closer to what we see in the movie. All in all, though, it's like another episode about midway through Objects in Space and Serenity. KF

ZOE: Preacher, don’t the Bible have some pretty specific things to say about killing?
BOOK: Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps...
