O.K. pretty good movie in places, but I think there are some gaps.

In the series

Mal seems to have adopted the Tams as part of the Serenity crew.

In the Movie

Surely it would occur to Mal that the bot had to be shot or she would tell the next person who entered the room the same thing.

There are others, but I'll get back to them later.

Mal's has grown darker and more selfish in response to Inara's departure--a condition made worse by the serious financial situation he mentions they're in. When Simon questions his orders (which he always hates) he's already on edge and pulls out the best threat he knows to shut Simon down. And after Simon hits him, he's mad enough and stubborn enough to agree--but his taking them back on shows how conflicted he was over this and how he still regards them as part of the crew

This one's easy. Why would Mal assume that anyone would follow him? His crew was holding off the Reavers and even if they broke through, odds are they wouldn't even pay attention to something that can't feel pain. Mal had no reason to suspect the Operative was still lurking about and thus didn't see the need to end the Lovebot. Besides, he was in kind of a rush, what with the Reaver apocalypse and all.

A lot probably happened after Inara and Book left. Without Inara and Book, who would have taken care of River when Simon was busy? Mal couldn't have taken care of River since he's the captain and he's always busy, neither could Zoe, she’s always with Mal, so that leaves Jayne, Wash, and Kaylee. Jayne does not like River and he goes out on missions with Mal and Zoe most of the time. Wash might be able to take care of River when he’s not piloting the ship but he’s never even spoken to River throughout the series. Kaylee could play with River when she’s not busy patching up Serenity but she can’t really take care of River. So I’m guessing that there were a lot of unpleasant incidents with River during the months when Inara and Book were off the ship and it probably really stressed out Mal.

Mal mentions that he lost some jobs, even honest ones because of the Tams. I'm assuming the resentment just built up over the months and reached a head when he got punched by a guy that was already causing problems.
