Yes we have Freshness Rating! So far there are only 5 reviews, but it's a start to grow some buzz for next week.

These are reviews from all over the world, and professionsals not anti-fans with a grudge. Here we go kids; this will be a good meter for judging how long we stay in theaters. If we're considered "fresh" (60% of reviews are positive) we could be around in theaters for a good long while.

Given 4 stars by Chris Cline of Shadows on the wall. http://www.shadowsonthewall.co.uk/05/serenity.htm

And this is what he had to say about it:

"Writer-director Whedon brings his snappy Buffy attitude to the big screen in fine style. Essentially a TV Western in space, this energetic adventure is thoroughly entertaining even if you've never seen the Firefly series on which it's based."

"SORRY - despite the fact that this film has already been screened to the general public at the Edinburgh Festival, Universal has slapped on an extra embargo, and the full review cannot appear here until two days before the film opens in the USA. No idea why, since it's actually rather good. All we can say is come back here on Sep 28th..."

This I do not understand. I've heard that studios will sometimes do this, not present the film to critics when they are worried it will be reviewed poorly. So at this point it seems we will only be able to get reviews from those who saw pre-screenings until Sept 28th. Is Universal that afraid that it won't be well received critically?

Let me know if there is another reason for and embargo that I am unaware of.

Well...the most negative review was from Lee's movie info (a website that manages to secure its status as a not very respectable authority with its appeal to porn downloaders’ paranoia...in the form of an anti tracking spyware banner add....their major sponsor)

Most other reviewers… even those that didn’t feel the movie was great...at least managed a reasonable analysis of the film which provided a great many positives. One major area of contention is the fact that it is based on a series....they seem to think that 2 much background material and familiarity with the characters is needed. I wonder if they would feel this if they didn’t know that the movie is based on a series to start with.....reviews I have had from people who saw the film and didn’t know about the show b4 hand evidence no such complaint.....

All reviewers applauded the storyline and dialogue....other than Lee.

In fact, Lee doesn’t seem to have watched the film much at all...and provides the sort of in depth analysis you expect from a grade 8 student who has only read the back of the book...

In reference to River, he says "masters the art of a monotonous facial expression. When she speaks, she usually just says...

Select to view spoiler:

“Miranda,” suggesting that it’s where she wants to go"

Not only does this contradict the other reviewers opinions of River in the movie.... not itself too great an issue (everyone is entitled to an opinion)...but to anyone that had watched the film this is blatantly not the case! If he really believes that, the only conclusion can be that Lee must have missed a good proportion of the film. Maybe his date was a comely distracting lass...or he was suffering some diarrhea issues?

Does Lee sometimes get tanked before reviewing a movie?

Who knows.

Mostly, the reviews are rather good...and I hold higher hopes for our lil flick than I did b4 reading them.

When studios are convinced the critical reaction would be bad, they don't hold any press screenings, and critics don't even get to see the movie until it's been released. Reviews then wouldn't appear until a day after the release. Embargoing reviews until the day of or a couple days before release is actually pretty normal. Traditionally, movie reviews are printed the day the movie comes out. Universal's just trying to enforce that (admittedly dying) tradition.
