What's up with Blue Sun?

All right, finally registered after months of lurking. I watched Firefly from day one (best show EVER!) and I just don't get what was up with Blue Sun? Did I miss the significance of why they're bad, or even who they are (what with River slashing Jayne('s shirt) and the can labels), or did we just not get that far in the story? I feel like I've looked everywhere and I still don't know.
