ID on Cartridge in 'War Stories'

In the episode "War Stories" Book is surveying the ambush scene and says:

"This is precision work. Sharpshooters. From the look of these wounds I'd say a 54R sniper rifle. Laser sights."

This is a reference to the 110 year old (then 610 year old) 7.62x54R rimmed Russian rifle cartridge, made famous by a number of WWII snipers and in continuous use for the past century by Finland, Russia and a number of eastern and far eastern nations. Though the rifles used by the ambushers were not Mosin-Nagants, the gangster after the crew was certainly Russian.

Here's my theory. The Mosin-Nagant rifle, like the Remington Rolling Block, Winchester leverguns, AK-47's and other primitive smoke poles seen on the rim are not from the Earth of Old. They are made out on the Rim by the settlers themselves because they have simple mechanics and can be made with simple forging and stamping machines using mixed quality steel. The Mosin in particular was over-engineered to be safe even if the steel quality wasn't the best. It can be made on 19th century equipment. THe 54R it shoots is also designed to tolerate variances in manufacturing. It can be made on simple equipment and even roll-crimped without causing too much trouble. It headspaces on its thick rim, so problems with shoulder dimensions (impossible to get right without the precise dies) don't matter much. I've shot Albanian surplus 54R that looks like a group of apes with ball-peen hammers made it, but it shoots more-or less fine.

Thus, the 54R and the rifles that shot it have survived on the rim for pretty much the same reasons it has survived in the Third World.

I suppose it could refer to the 6.5mmx54R Roumanian Mannlicher cartridge that reportedly killed US President Kennedy, 'though (again reportedly) Yves Adele Harlow is the only person who could fire those rapidly with accuracy. But this discussion dignifies a ridiculous bit of dialogue. A forensic pathologist couldn't tell an entrance wound made by a 7.62mm Russian from a 7.62mm NATO, from a .308, couldn't tell anything about the rifle that fired the cartridge, & would laugh in your face if you asked whether it had laser sights. This is a good candidate for the dumbest line in the series. Too late to let it sink without a trace so, this calls for a new thread.
