Does anyone know why there are two different characters for the "blue" in blue sun's logo?

It seems that at the beginning of the series the word "qing" (青) was used exclusively. Towards the end, the word "lan" (藍) starts to appear instead. Are they both acceptable translations? If so, why would firefly designers change the logo that they had previously established?

靑 is the original translation. Later on, it was learned that "靑" would never actually be used to modify the noun 日 (sun) and that 蓝 is much more appropriate.
