A nice piece on why Fox killed FF, and how scifi producers ought to avoid the broadcast networks and go for cable instead:

I hope Tim Minear reads this article and takes it to heart. Maybe then we will be able to enjoy one of his brilliant series the way he intends us to.

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

Seems like a reasonable article, until I try to apply it to Firefly.

But a word of advice to would-be scifi producers: yeah, you can take the fancy-pants network development deal, take your chances, and probably end up back in the unemployment line in six months. Or, scale back your expenses, skip the networks, put your show on cable, and like "Stargate SG-1," someday you might find yourself still on the air, nine years later.

How could Joss have scaled back expenses? Let me count the ways:

1) Hire mostly unknown actors (he did)
2) Scale back the sets
3) Scale back costumes
4) Scale back locations
5) Scale back special effects
6) Make it in Canada, with enough Canadian content to qualify for gov't subsidies
7) Do without a co-executive producer
8) Take a smaller cut for himself

It's left as an exercise for the student how much 2), 4) & 5) would affect the product, but . . .

6) Nathan could work it, probably Jewel, but three other cast members would be replaced, and fuggedabout Greg Edmonson & David Boyd. You figure it out.

7) Joss was producing three TV series @that time so, not possible.

Imo, one of the reasons Firefly was so good was the FOX network gave Joss US$38million to make it.

Keep the Shiny Side Up . . .
