CHRONICTHEHEDGEHOG

I currently run a firefly themed roleplay and due to some crazy circumstances Mal has ended up the bad guy and in control of an army of Reavers. As such as I got to thinking about the Reavers and why they are the way they are, I find it had to believe the men gone crazy on the edge of space idea, it seems very un-Joss.

They're obviously intelligent enough to fly ships and have some sort of culture. It's also notable that firefly is very much cowboys in space and the Reavers are the Indians (Native Americans if you want to be PC). So here's my theory:

Before leaving Earth, the planets humanity currently inhabitants had to be terraformed from the harsh worlds they were, so advance ships were sent out to apply the terraforming technology and work the worlds in. To survive in the hostile worlds the men changed, acting and appearing different to the originals terraformers. After an amount of time (I'm guessing anywhere between 50-200 years) the first settlers turned up and meeting the terraformers (or more likely their descendents) took it upon themselves to wipe them off the face of each world they inhabited. Forced to the edges of the system they pillage towns and ships, living by a different code to the rest of humanity, but in many ways not unlike the Serenity crew.

Anyways, that's my theory. Anyone able to completely disprove it?

EMBERS

There is a fairly recent theory about how the Anasazi Indians (Ariz & New Mexico approx 1500 years ago) may have disappeared because of some kind of cannibalism (because the archeologists haven't found any evidence of disease or famine).

This may be a wild theory, but it also might have inspired Joss....

Regardless of whether or not you believe that wild violent behavior can lead to even wilder and more violent behavior (the insanity of the man who survived the Reavers attack and ended up becoming a Reaver), it does seem to be a theory Joss is playing with.

As far as the intelligence of the Reavers, true they can fly their ship...but they do so without any protection from their own radioactive power source. So they are clearly self-destructive and not behaving as 'reasonable' people.

Myself I would resist any theory that makes them sound like they are

because I don't believe that that is the direction in which Joss is leading us...
I don't we are supposed to take the Reaver's murderous cannibalistic behavior as being human at all....
