The one seen in "The Message" also has buttons and has a material similar to a cardigan but as an overcoat. There is a huge burn mark on the coat's left shoulder which is where an Independent's patch would be so i'm wondering if he burned it off but the color is still much darker than the ones seen during the battle sequences. My theory has always been that it was the coat he'd worn during the Battle of Serenity Valley and after years of roughing it with Zoe through the galaxy it got damaged so he heavily modified it. The buttons after years had long fallen off so he modified the coat with the clamps we see and also burned off the Independent's patch. He has repaired the coat in the show (you can see stitches where Patience shot him in the pilot) so it wouldn't surprise me if it was his original military issue. The coat wouldn't be the first thing he's ever modified, his Moses has been heavily modified multiple times including during the comics (In Better Days he extended the loaders so that they jot out by the barrel of the gun, also in the film the magazine clip is different) I'm just curious as to what you guys all think and if you have any theories regarding his coat.
