I used to love that show back in the day. Only really caught the first two seasons while it was on though. Been watching a few of them recently.

An episode from the 5th Season, I believe, called "Star Crossed". Not one of my favorite episodes, but not a bad one either. It was from 1999.

I might be wrong, but without knowing any better I would bet that Joss saw Nathan in that episode of The Outer Limits and wanted to cast Nathan in the role of Mal because of it.

In Star Crossed, Nathan didn't fly a ship. He owned a bar. Not even a real bar, but a coffee bar...

But there was war all around him, and his establishment was frequented by commoners and military alike. Just like Mal would have been able to, he managed to play both sides because he had to. If the guy who ran this bar was able to buy a ship and get away from it all, he would have been Mal.

RIVERLOVE

Star Crossed was based on the movie Casablanca. As Michael Ryan, Nathan is spectacular in this gem of an episode. He's every bit or perhaps even more of a bad-ass/wise-ass anti-hero in this than he was in Firefly. The last time I met him in 2011 I asked him if he had any thoughts or memories of his experience working on Star Crossed. He said his agent called him with the job offer. Within a few days he was in Vancouver on the set. He said it was freezing cold during the week they shot the episode.

If you haven't yet seen it, try to watch Adam Baldwin's Outer Limits episode Phobos Rising. He co-stars with Joan Chen, and it's another great sci-fi gem. I recorded both episodes on dvd about 10 years ago and still enjoy watching them often.

Phobos Rising was a great episode (I didn't remember the name, but I did recognize Adam Baldwin, thanks for reminding me about it).

What was funny about Star Crossed is that Nathan did a little bit of narration in the beginning. He didn't replace the normal Narrator, but he did a bit of his own even though he had nothing to do with the characters and what they were going through in that first 4 or 5 minutes.

I couldn't help but thinking to myself "man.... that sounds a lot like Mal"... :)

I wasn't even surprised, but I was happy to be seeing something he did 2 years before Firefly. Hell I never even watched Firefly until about 2006 when my brother and father broke me down and I finally watched it.

(That's a lie. When my brother was living with me and I fell asleep on the couch one night, I woke up and he was watching Firefly and when I opened my eyes the first sight I laid eyes on was our Mrs. Mal Reynolds and I was twitterpated.)

Really, when you think of Firefly as a whole, isn't Mal's relationship with Inara a complete parallel to Rick and Ilsa?

I suppose Wash could be "Sam". Nobody on board could play an instrument, but Wash could fly a ship and was great at playing with dinosaur toys :)

Do Right, Be Right. :)

If you haven't seen it, and I know it's a LOT to ask....

Watch ALL 5 seasons of Chuck, also starring Adam Baldwin.

Recently one of my brother's asked me "what was your favorite ending to a TV show?".

Unfortunatley, I had to answer that the ending to Breaking Bad was the best ending to the best TV show ever made in my opinion...

But I wanted to open that question up wider because I felt it was an awesome question to ask somebody...

Two other shows that I wouldn't even put in my "TOP 5" shows ever also got the "best of Jack" award for best ending...

Of shows that weren't Breaking Bad, I'd have to give the BEST ENDING EVER to Chuck.

Chuck isn't in my top 3 shows ever. Not my top 5. Probably barely in my top 10....

A very large part of the reason it's in my top 10 is because of Adam, and imagining what my 15 year old geeky self would do when he was my boss. :)

But that's not why Adam made it special. In the end, it all came down to a single line he spoke and I can't tell you because if you haven't seen it I feel like I'm basically raping you if I tell you anything about the last few episodes.

The one thing I will say about the ending of Chuck is that it's not the typical comical ending of most stupid sit-coms.

Firstly, that's because it wasn't a sit-com. There wasn't a laugh track.

Honestly....

I'm done talking about it now.

It just makes me feel bad.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

House was the other show with the best ending....

Shame on me for liking sad endings...

But only if they're happy because they're sad...

House was like the dude on Shawshak Redeption that crawled through two miles of shit and came out sparkling on the other side. His boy *Spoiler ALERT*.....

Ain't no way I'm going to ruin that story for you.

You'll have to watch it :)

If you have at least half a heart I guarantee it will make you tear up.

There's no shame in it. Just enjoy it.

Crying, particularly when you thought you were no longer capable of such an action is very cathartic.

Do Right, Be Right. :)
