Quote:

At the age of 15, Prof Sir John Gurdon ranked last out of the 250 boys in his Eton year group at biology, and was in the bottom set in every other science subject.

Sixty-four years later he has been recognised as one of the finest minds of his generation after being awarded the £750,000 annual prize, which he shares with Japanese stem cell researcher Shinya Yamanaka.

Speaking after learning of his award in London on Monday, Sir John revealed that his school report still sits above his desk at the Gurdon Institute in Cambridge, which is named in his honour.

Of course, this presumes most school systems have anything to do with education....
*scoff*
Beyond the very basics, rote learning, memorization and obedience aren't conductive to critical thought, cross examination and exploration of ideas, learning, above all... to THINK, to CREATE, to QUESTION.
Those are dangerous things, since they threaten the disastrous status quo of a stagnated and failing society.

Without public schools, I believe most of us would be illiterate.
Too many are, anyway.

If most of what we know was learned in PS, we tend to assume that's
the only place to get real knowledge.

This guy was an artist from age 4. An amazing talent.
People sometimes told him, "You didn't draw that. You couldn't." or
"You can't paint that way without training. You wouldn't know how."

Mathematicians don't amaze me so much: They just take the next step.
But folks who make intuitive breakthroughs in physics, I don't get it.
How could they just know that stuff? But at least I don't say, "You'll never
be a real physicist unless you stick to what's known." I say, "WOW!"

In the mists of prehistory, I cannot comprehed how the hobby, practice,
then science of metallurgy began.
