Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

So, answer me this, if anyone would like...

Why are the Ukrainians so attached to NAZIism, when it was the the NAZI party who took their newly elected govt , after declaring independence from the USSR, and put them into concentration camps ?

I mean, I get why they wanted to sidle up w/ the enemies of the USSR, so they could gain their freedom, but the NAZIS didn't exactly do them any favors, did they ?

It's because being under Soviet rule is a lot fresher in people's minds then anythings the Nazis did.

Which is why so many would prefer Russia.

I don't see how neo-nazis hope to gain sympathy from the Ukrainian public when they go around and beat up folks for no reason.

Right now they are fighting the pro-Russian side. Since most places in Ukraine, save Crimea, are against Russian involvement in the Ukraine and want a united country the Nazis groups actions are going to be seen as positive.

Actually, for many they did. All kinds of favors. But of course some favors needed to be done in return. Their descendants live there today.

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

Nice piece of propaganda, what with the ominous music and the equation of nationalism with Nazism. Sure be interesting to know who made it, so you could see where they're coming from.

HUH????

You mean, neo-Nazis fighting FOR Russia???

Umm... perhaps you don't know that the two political parties which quote Hitler- the Svoboda (Freedom) Party and Pravy Sektor (Right Sector) Party are in the Kiev government, as ministers of internal security? That any official link between neo-Nazis and any movement is with the US-backed government in Kiev? That 26 million Russians died as a result of Hitler's Nazi invasion, and therefore the feeling in Russia and among Russian-speaking people against Nazism is very strong?

Yes, There Are Bad Guys in the Ukrainian Government.
It's time for a frank conversation about some of the unsavory characters in Kiev.

Quote:

The uncomfortable truth is that a sizeable portion of Kiev's current government -- and the protesters who brought it to power -- are, indeed, fascists. If Western governments hope to steer Ukraine clear from the most unsavory characters in Moscow and Kiev, they will need to wage a two-pronged diplomatic offensive: against Putin's propaganda and, at the same time, against Ukraine's resurgent far-right.

Ukraine is home to Svoboda, arguably Europe's most influential far-right movement today. (In the photo above, Svoboda activists seize a Ministry of Agriculture building during Kiev's Euromaidan protests in January.) Party leader Oleh Tyahnybok is on record complaining that his country is controlled by a "Muscovite-Jewish mafia," while his deputy derided the Ukrainian-born film star Mila Kunis as a "dirty Jewess." In Svoboda's eyes, gays are perverts and black people unfit to represent the nation at Eurovision, lest viewers come away thinking Ukraine is somewhere besides Uganda...

Today, Svoboda holds a larger chunk of its nation's ministries (nearly a quarter, including the prized defense portfolio) than any other far-right party on the continent. Ukraine's deputy prime minister represents Svoboda (the smaller, even more extreme "Right Sector" coalition fills the deputy National Security Council chair), as does the prosecutor general and the deputy chair of parliament ---- where the party is the fourth-largest. And Svoboda's fresh faces are scarcely different from the old: one of its freshmen members of parliament is the founder of the "Joseph Goebbels Political Research Centre" and has hailed the Holocaust as a "bright period" in human history.

American neo-nazis aren't exactly doing their thing with Germany in mind, either. That's the fun thing about it, it's so versatile, and always remains so much simpler than that messy democratic hogwash. You place your own group in the top spot, pick your convenient "foreign" scapegoats and off you march! That's why you can have neo-nazis everywhere! Remember Gold Dawn in Greece floating to significance when things went bad there?

Reading his post, I don't think that is what he said at all. Quite the opposite.

Oh, OK, I misread his post. MY BAD!

SORRY ABOUT THAT M52!

But, do read the part about the neo-Nazis in the Kiev government. It is information that is almost impossible to find . You would think that a straightforward description of the new government and the appointees and their party affiliations should be an easy piece of info to find!
