Sources with knowledge of her decision tell CNN that Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska is expected to announce Friday she will run as a write-in candidate in the November election, in a bid to keep her seat.

A Republican source tells CNN that Sen. Murkowski has informed "a few" close colleagues on the hill that she will run as a write-in candidate. A separate source with knowledge of her decision also tells CNN she plans to announce her write-in candidacy Friday.

She was defeated in last month's primary by one-time longshot Joe Miller, an attorney backed by many in the tea party movement, and by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
