to a piece about England's treatment of Nazi spies during World War II.

At the height of the Blitz, they didn't torture anybody, only denied prisoners solid food once-- ( One German organized a hunger strike, so they put everybody on glucose and water. After 72 hours, the Germans ended it and began to cooperate, at least in diet.).

Although every one of the 400 some prisoners was a suspected spy, ( and probably beyond suspected, almost certainly were.) and therefore subject to the Death penalty, only 16 were executed.

Note-- I haven't actually read the book referenced in the article, but I'll accept what the author of the article says about it. Gonna hafta run it down.
