That one's tricky, but if you figured all the rest of that out, and my heartfelt, profound respect for having done so, you might be able to solve that riddle.

I'm just hazarding a guess here, based on personal experiences of my own, but it seems to me that telling yourself and others that you're NOT these things gives you a reason to strive to be more of these things.

The people I fear most are the ones who are already firmly convinced that they're really great people who are truly doing "god's work" in a noble, decent, and heroic fashion. They deem themselves perfect (or at least above the rest of us), and so have nothing better to strive for. And once you've convinced yourself that you're doing the noble deeds, any deed can be rationalized as "noble".

Am I perfect? Oh HELL no. Am I a good person? Not really, but I'm trying to be a better one. It's not enlightenment, it's not redemption or salvation, but it's a kind of path to all of those. If you're honest about it, you'll never reach those goals, but trying gets you that much closer.

Because I cannot accept that the ends justify the means, and I can and do use some pretty awful means to what I consider to be a decent end - but damned if I will ever accept that it's acceptable, morally, to do such a thing.

What rooks me worst is that I shouldn't *need* to.

But what do you do when evils are allowed to propagate for profit, when all the rules and laws supposed to prevent it are ignored, or twisted to protect it, when standing for something decent makes you a villain, when the only means you have at your disposal that work are bad enough that you start to wonder if all you're really doing is adding your own increment to the cesspool...

And then you see the hope and wonder and faith that YOU gave back to someone, and remember why you do this - and question why it wasn't possible any other way.

And then you do something about it.

But yanno, I'd like to be.
I'd love to see the day when my niche in our screwed up, so-called society gets filled in and paved over, to be not needed in this fashion any more.

Mr. Miller's bill is one step forward in that direction, if only enough people can find it within themselves to care.
