There is a third possibility: Within days of taking office, Trump immediately fired the heads of TSA and gutted the federal Aviation Security Advisory Committee, which serves as a TSA advisory body. He fired every committee member.

The Trump administration could provide no reason for the dismissal of the committee. The Department of Homeland Security issued the customary response that the committee didn’t align with Trump’s agenda. It doesn’t acknowledge that committees like the Aviation Safety Advisory aren’t about politics and enforcing the right-wing agenda. They are about keeping America safe.

At the time of the plane crash, the FAA was also without a chief, as Michael Whitaker resigned on January 20. His resignation was foreseeable once Trump won re-election, especially since Trump’s right-hand man Elon Musk had attacked Whitaker and demanded his resignation. Instead of prioritizing a replacement for Whitaker, Trump focused on gutting advisory committees and firing TSA heads as the FAA struggled with dangerous staff shortages.

Explain the timeline of how Trump firing top-brass committee members last week had anything to do with any individual pilot's job performance or that of any air traffic control employees.

In what world does this theory make any sense at all other than inside the heads of brainless TDS sufferers who are just looking for any possible reason to say I told you so after your entire world just fell apart?

These are highly skilled positions that require intelligent people who are able to carry out their jobs without needing to be babysat. The entire airline industry and the military doesn't just fall apart or run around like a chicken with its head cut off when some pencil-pushing pindicks at the top get ousted.

But... if they're full of DEI hires that are not qualified for the position and/or can't fucking do anything without a boss looking over their shoulder and barking orders at them all the time, that's a problem we're going to going to have to address going forward.

Go fuck yourself, 6ixStringJack. Trump fired all of the upper echelon who control air traffic. He told all the lower level people to quit, 2,000,000 of them, starting at the beginning of this week. They have until the end of next week to make a decision. He is offering them 8 months of cash to quit. It is 8 months of vacation time. Some of them decided not to work the rest of the week in the control tower. Since Trump will be doing the investigation of himself and the accident, there won't be any facts if he can help it about what he did to the people who run the safety system. When some facts do come out, Trump and you will say the Truth is Fake. 6ixStringJack, Go Fuck Yourself.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), who used to pilot Black Hawk helicopters as a combat veteran in Iraq, said that letters President Donald Trump's administration sent to federal workers this week asking them to quit their jobs could be partially to blame for the crash. The air traffic controller who was on duty at the time of the crash was performing duties normally done by two controllers.

"[Letters were sent to] some air traffic controllers that are responsible for airspace in the Northeast region. Basically trying to scare them into quitting at a time when we have a shortage of air traffic controllers. So I don’t think the Trump administration is in a strong position right now to start blaming others.”

So Democrats are supposed to show deference to Donald Trump, who won by 1.5 percent — and didn’t even win a majority of the overall vote?

Now, I have a hypothesis about the belief that Democrats should defer to Trump in a way that Republicans never have to Democratic presidents. It is, I suspect, in part a perverse response to Trump’s utter lack of the moral and intellectual qualities we used to expect in a president. I’ve never seen anyone say this explicitly, but as I read it the implicit reasoning goes like this: the fact that Trump won despite his obvious awfulness means that his issues must have resonated powerfully with voters.

But was Trump’s awfulness actually obvious to voters? Not to the low-information voters who provided his margin of victory. And was it even that obvious to voters who followed the news, but only somewhat superficially? The mainstream media heavily sanewashed Trump throughout the campaign.

So why did Trump win? I’ve seen many analyses, some quite elaborate, but to some extent you need to bear in mind that at least some of the people pushing these analyses are in effect talking their own book — making the case that Democrats would have won, or will win in the future, if only they were taking the analyst’s advice. I still haven’t seen anything convincing me that the basic story wasn’t simple, and the same as the story that explains incumbent party defeats around the world.

It's a well-established result that when prices and wages both rise — as they did almost everywhere as economies recovered from Covid, stressing supply chains — workers tend to attribute higher wages to their own efforts, while blaming higher prices on external forces, especially politicians:

Source: BLS

This logic is what made 2024, as John Burn-Murdoch put it, a “graveyard of incumbents.” But it didn’t give Trump a mandate to rename the Gulf of Mexico, invade Greenland, shut down the National Institutes of Health, fire DEI administrators or really to do anything besides reduce prices and control illegal immigration (which was already way down.)

Many voters believed that he could do just that; the most recent surveys show Republican voters on average believing that Trump can magically reduce inflation to zero over the next year — and since that’s an average, many of them apparently think he can actually reduce prices, which he indeed promised to do during the campaign:

Expected Percent Changes in Prices during the next year

Source: Briefing Book

He can’t, of course, and has no plan to fight inflation, let alone reduce prices. His most recent blast on the subject is almost pathetic in its lack of ideas, other than the proposition that DEI is somehow responsible for everything bad:
Quote:

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
Because Jay Powell and the Fed failed to stop the problem they created with Inflation, I will do it by unleashing American Energy production, slashing Regulation, rebalancing International Trade, and reigniting American Manufacturing, but I will do much more than stopping Inflation, I will make our Country financially, and otherwise, powerful again! The Fed has done a terrible job on Bank Regulation. Treasury is going to lead the effort to cut unnecessary Regulation, and will unleash lending for all American people and businesses. If the Fed had spent less time on DEI, gender ideology, "green" energy, and fake climate change, Inflation would never have been a problem. Instead, we suffered from the worst Inflation in the History of our Country!

Jan 29, 2025, 5:17 PM

But Democrats can’t just sit around waiting for Trump’s promises to fail. They need to constantly challenge him on the issue, keep reminding voters that he lied about it all through the campaign, and hang rising prices around his neck every step of the way.

Nor, as I see it, should they narrowly focus on kitchen-table issues. One reason low-information voters may have believed Trump’s nonsense claims about being able to reduce prices is that some of them really thought he was the brilliant manager he played on TV. The reality, however, is that the Trump administration has made a complete shambles of its first 10 days, especially with their it’s on, no it isn’t, yes it is spending freeze that is both destructive and clearly illegal, and has itself been frozen by the courts. It would be political malpractice for Democrats not to make an issue of Trump’s raging incompetence.

I also think and certainly hope that the ugliness of Trump’s character will quickly become a political liability. We all know and dislike people who are always looking for someone else to blame when bad things happen. I can’t imagine that Trump’s reaction to the DC plane crash — blaming it on DEI, that is, asserting without evidence that someone nonwhite, female, or both must have been responsible — will play well with most Americans. And Democrats shouldn’t hold off on pointing out how despicably he’s behaving because political consultants have told them to focus on the price of eggs.

So Democrats and MAGA opponents shouldn’t hold their tongues and try to make nice with Trump in the belief that he represents the will of the people. Americans are just starting to find out that the guy they elected and his policies aren’t at all what they thought they were voting for. And we should do everything we can to accelerate their awful journey of discovery.

6ixStringJack, the Cold Winds of Change are Indeed Blowing:

US President Donald Trump's response to the recent Washington DC plane crash has attracted criticism for being "cold", as he pinned the blame on those with disabilities as he lashed out at DEI policies.

Most recently, he was asked about whether he would visit the grounds upon which the tragic incident took place, to which he responded: "The water? I'm not going to go swimming."

As a result of these harsh responses, many have looked to the past to see Barack Obama's response in a similarly awful situation during his time as US President, with major differences being highlighted by people on social media.

Back in 2009, Obama spoke about the Continental Airlines crash that resulted in the deaths of 49 people. My thoughts and prayers are with the family's and friends who lost loved ones. As always, our thanks go out to the brave first responders who saved people lives and work to keep people safe."

FAA’s diversity push includes focus on hiring people with ‘severe intellectual’ and ‘psychiatric’ disabilities

The Federal Aviation Administration is actively recruiting workers who suffer “severe intellectual” disabilities, psychiatric problems and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring initiative spelled out on the agency’s website.

“Targeted disabilities are those disabilities that the Federal government, as a matter of policy, has identified for special emphasis in recruitment and hiring,” the FAA’s website states. “They include hearing, vision, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism.”

The initiative is part of the FAA’s “Diversity and Inclusion” hiring plan, which claims “diversity is integral to achieving FAA’s mission of ensuring safe and efficient travel across our nation and beyond.”

The FAA’s website shows the agency’s guidelines on diversity hiring were last updated on March 23, 2022.

The FAA, which is overseen by Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s Department of Transportation, is a government agency charged with regulating civil aviation and employs roughly 45,000 people.

Being America’s friend is dangerous these days these days

I know this is Trump, so the answer is ¯\_(“)_/¯. But over the past two weeks his wrath has been aimed at Denmark, Colombia, and now Canada and Mexico — all of them among our staunchest allies. You could hardly pick a group of better friends to the US than these.

On a concrete basis, Denmark has agreed to increase its defense spending to 2%, meeting a Trump demand. Colombia has been accepting US deportation flights for years. Mexico has agreed to reinstate Trump's beloved Remain in Mexico policy. And Canada has been cooperating on the fentanyl front even though nobody thinks there's very much it can do. The United States simply doesn't have any big gripes against any of these countries.

Shouldn't Trump try to pick on at least a few countries that we don't actually like very much? Why the focus on longtime friends and allies?

If Obama Had Sent a Mob to Kill a Cop, Republicans Would Never Let You Forget It

In your mind, turn the tables for a moment.

If Barack Obama had sent a murderous mob against the Capitol and they had beaten and pepper-sprayed Officer Brian Sicknick so badly he suffered two strokes and died the next day, how would Republicans refer to the so-called “J6 rioters”? Is there any doubt in your mind that they’d be calling them “Cop killers”? Every day, day after day, in every venue possible? And if Obama pardoned them, they’d be demanding impeachment right now?

If Bill Clinton had denied security to military or intelligence officers like Mark Milley or John Bolton who were under death threats from Iran, what would Republicans say? You know they’d be charging Clinton with attempted murder, saying he was no better than a mob boss who’d sanctioned a hit.

If Joe Biden had started shipping white supremacists convicted of criminal acts to Guantanamo, what would the GOP be claiming non-stop? We’d never hear the end about his sanctioning torture, murder, and how the entire offshore enterprise was unconstitutional and illegal. They’d call him Ayatollah Biden.

And that’s just scratching the tiniest surface of opportunities Democrats have blown in the past week to attack Trump and Republicans for very real violations of law, norms, and the Constitution.

And all the other cops that "died" on January 6th all killed themselves in the weeks and months after the event.

And you never asked yourself why those cops all killed themselves.

Trump Admin Emails Air Traffic Controllers: Quit Your Jobs. REALLY!

Government personnel received a strange request from the Trump administration in their inboxes just before 8:30 p.m. Thursday. It urged federal workers to quit their “lower productivity jobs” and seek employment in the private sector.

The mass email urged employees—including those at the Federal Aviation Administration (F.A.A.)—to quit less than 24 hours after a plane crash in Washington D.C., which killed 67 people and was suspected to have been caused by air traffic controller staffing shortages.

“We encourage you to find a job in the private sector as soon as you would like to do so,” stated the email sent by the Office of Personnel Management, The New York Times reported. “The way to greater American prosperity is encouraging people to move from lower productivity jobs in the public sector to higher productivity jobs in the private sector.”

In the form of Frequently Asked Questions, the email also encouraged employees who did choose to leave their jobs, to take on a second job, or to vacation to their “dream destination” while still on the payroll before permanently leaving. That advice is contradictory to years old regulations that have prohibited federal employees from picking up second sources of income.

The late Thursday night email follows up on an earlier one which offered federal workers other incentives to abandon their job security, such as eight months of pay if they obliged by Feb. 6.

The Trump administration did not respond to a request for comment by the Daily Beast at time of publication.

The president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, Nick Daniels, told the Times that it is “not yet clear” how the resignation program will come into effect.

Daniels, who is also the union representative for air traffic controllers, added that union workers are “concerned” about the consequences of losing “experienced aviation safety personnel during a universally recognized air traffic controller staffing shortage.”

Paul Krugman / Jan 31, 2025 at 4:27 PM

https://paulkrugman.substack.com/p/the-end-of-north-america

I’ve been saying for a while that markets were far too complacent about Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico, believing that he wouldn’t follow through because it’s such a stupid, self-destructive idea. As I wrote on Jan. 22,

[S]o far markets have shrugged Trump’s tariff threat off, apparently in the belief that he won’t follow through. But why not? Economists would, if he asked, tell him that high tariffs on neighboring nations closely integrated with the United States will do major damage; businesspeople would say the same thing. But if Trump wants your opinion, he’ll tell you what he wants it to be.

I believe that the only thing that might dissuade him from destructive policies would be a severely adverse market reaction — which means that the lack of such a reaction, based on the belief that he won’t really do it, greatly increases the probability that he really will.

And he really did. The New York Times reports,

President Trump plans to move forward with imposing stiff tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China on Saturday, in an attempt to further pressure America’s largest trading partners to accept deportees and stop the flow of migrants and drugs into the country.

In a news briefing on Friday, the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said the president would put in place a 25 percent tariff on goods from Mexico, a 25 percent tariff on goods from Canada and a 10 percent tariff on goods from China.

Ms. Leavitt said the president had chosen to impose tariffs because the three countries “have all enabled illegal drugs to pour into America.”

“The amount of fentanyl that has been seized at the southern border in the last few years alone has the potential to kill tens of millions of Americans,” she said. “And so the president is intent on doing this.”

The tariffs are likely to initiate the kind of disruptive trade wars seen in Mr. Trump’s first term, but at a much larger scale.

I think you have to see “fentanyl” in this context as the equivalent of “weapons of mass destruction in the runup to the invasion of Iraq. It’s not the real reason; Canada isn’t even a major source of fentanyl. It’s just a plausible-sounding reason for a president to do what he wanted to do for other reasons — George W. Bush wanted a splendid little war, Donald Trump just wants to impose tariffs and assert dominance.

Also, although I’m not sure such things matter anymore, what’s the legal basis for these tariffs? U.S. trade law gives the president huge discretion to impose tariffs, but only for a specific set of reasons: economic injury from import surges (Section 201), national security (Section 232), unfair foreign competition (Section 301), dumping — sales below costs. Drug smuggling, especially imaginary drug smuggling, isn’t on the list.

The president can impose tariffs much more broadly if he declares a national economic emergency. But has he done that? Does 2.6 percent inflation and 4.1 percent unemployment sound like an economic emergency to you? And even if Trump gets around to declaring an economic emergency, what does fentanyl have to do with it?

As far as I can tell, there’s a real possibility that Trump’s new tariffs will face a court challenge, and that he will lose. I’m not an expert on trade law, but I do know a bit, and this looks flatly illegal to me.

But even if these tariffs are blocked, or Trump finds some way to declare victory and call them off, the damage will be immense.

As I wrote the other day, in the three decades since NAFTA went into effect, North American

manufacturing has evolved into a highly integrated system whose products — autos in particular, but manufactured goods more broadly — typically contain components from all three members of the pact, which may be shipped across the borders multiple times. Manufacturers developed this system not just because tariffs were low or zero, but because they thought they had a guarantee that tariffs would stay low.

One way of saying this is that until just the other day there was really no such thing as U.S. manufacturing, Canadian manufacturing or Mexican manufacturing, just North American manufacturing — a highly efficient, mutually beneficial system that sprawled across the three nations’ borders.

But now we have a U.S. president saying that a duly negotiated and signed trade pact isn’t worth the paper it was printed on — that he can impose high tariffs on the other signatories whenever he feels like it. And even if the tariffs go away, the private sector will know that they can always come back; the credibility of this trade agreement, or any future trade agreement, will be lost. So North American manufacturing will disintegrate — that is, dis-integrate — reverting to inefficient, fragmented national industries.

Hence my title, “The end of North America.”

And to think that many people imagined that Trump would be good for business.

Also, unchecked drug smuggling from the wide open southern border is all Trump needs to call an emergency. Nobody will challenge this because nobody can challenge this.

Fentanyl is the Trumptards' drug. Trump wants to preserve his base by keeping the most worthless Americans alive and voting. Most of America's problems with drugs and drug cartels could be fixed by making drugs legal, which would destroy the high prices cartels can charge while, simultaneously, ridding America of drug-taking Trumptards. Making gluttony, tobacco, and alcohol legal has been very helpful in ridding America of older Trumptards who are likely to vote. Making all drugs legal would speed up the process by killing them at a younger age. Trumptards are unlikely to listen to experts telling them drugs are bad since they don't listen to warnings about tobacco, for example. Trumptards feel that "freedom" means to live and die stupidly.

Would making drugs legal destroy drug cartels?
It would create a significant problem for the cartels. They would lose much of their income.

It is a certainty that I will continue beating up Trumptards, ones like Rush Limbaugh, rewarded the medal of freedom from Trump because he would die from tobacco, or my fat Trumptard neighbor who died of gluttony (diabetes killed him), or the Trumptard neighbor who was killed by her son, also a Trumptard who was arrested by Baytown's police for drug possession. Trumptards are killing themselves without admitting that "freedom" to do as they please is incompatible with health and longevity.

6ix, you have several markers for an early death: alcohol, tobacco, diabetes, and paranoia or all around mental dysfunction. Quoting you:

(6ixStringJack, Trump can extort $10 billion from Paramount. The Winds of Change are blowing.)

Paramount may reportedly settle Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit against CBS so his administration doesn’t try to block its planned merger with Skydance

By Alena Botros | January 31, 2025 at 12:55 PM CST

https://fortune.com/2025/01/31/paramount-trump-cbs-60-minutes-settleme
nt-skydance-merger
/

Donald Trump sued CBS for its “60 Minutes” interview with Kamala Harris days before his Election Day victory. Now, CBS’ parent company Paramount is in talks to settle, according to the New York Times. If it does settle, that would make it the third mega media company to do so in a matter of months.

During her presidential run, Kamala Harris sat for an interview with “60 Minutes” that aired in October on CBS. It was not a live broadcast. Then, her rival Donald Trump sued CBS for $10 billion in damages, accusing it of deceitful editing. CBS and “60 Minutes” said the claims were false. That was before Trump won the election and returned to the White House.

Now, CBS’s parent company Paramount is reportedly in talks to settle with Trump, according to the New York Times. Discussions between their representatives are underway, three people with knowledge of the talks told the outlet.

Paramount executives reportedly think settling would keep the Trump administration from blocking or delaying its planned multibillion dollar merger with Skydance, several people with knowledge of the matter told the publication. Paramount and Skydance reached a deal to merge in the summer, but there has been some opposition. Skydance is an entertainment company run by David Ellison, son of Oracle’s billionaire cofounder Larry Ellison.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that executives were holding internal conversations about settling, citing people familiar with the matter. Executives at both companies reportedly think Trump’s problem with CBS would make the review process for the planned merger harder, per the Wall Street Journal. To be clear, no deal has been reached and such talks don’t always result in a deal.

Paramount did not immediately respond to Fortune’s request for comment.

Still, Paramount’s controlling shareholder and chair Shari Redstone is in favor of settling, according to two people with knowledge of her thinking, per the New York Times. Paramount was founded by her father, Sumner Redstone. The merger would end the Redstone family control, but it wouldn’t come cheap. Shari would benefit from the sale of her stock.

Whatever happens, the news comes less than two months after Disney reached a settlement with Trump in his defamation case against ABC News and its anchor George Stephanopoulos. Stephanopoulos said on air that Trump had been found civilly liable for rape — but really, Trump had been found liable for sexual abuse. The company agreed to donate $15 million to Trump’s future presidential foundation and museum and an additional $1 million for his legal fees. ABC News and its star anchor would publish a statement saying it regretted the remarks made about Trump.

Separately, the Wall Street Journal recently reported that Meta agreed to pay about $25 million to settle a lawsuit from four years ago. Trump filed the suit after the company and its chief executive Mark Zuckerberg locked his social-media accounts following the Jan. 6 riot; $22 million from the settlement would reportedly go toward Trump’s presidential library and the rest to legal fees, but Meta wouldn’t admit wrongdoing.

President Trump's planned tariffs could effectively tax the average U.S. household an extra $830 this year, an analysis from the nonpartisan nonprofit Tax Foundation finds.

By the numbers: The foundation estimated Friday that Trump's proposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, as well as 10% tariffs on China, would shrink the economic output of the U.S. by 0.4% and increase taxes by $1.2 trillion between 2025 and 2034.

Trump and Elon Musk Just Pulled Off Another Purge—and It’s a Scary One

Did Musk’s alleged effort to access the government’s payment systems have Trump’s blessing? Or was he going rogue? Either scenario is bad.

By Greg Sargent | January 31, 2025

https://newrepublic.com/article/191014/trump-elon-musk-treasury-purge

Typically only a small number of career officials control Treasury’s payment systems. Run by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, the sensitive systems control the flow of more than $6 trillion annually to households, businesses and more nationwide. Tens, if not hundreds, of millions of people across the country rely on the systems, which are responsible for distributing Social Security and Medicare benefits, salaries for federal personnel, payments to government contractors and grant recipients and tax refunds, among tens of thousands of other functions.

Former officials I spoke with were at a loss to explain why Musk would want such access. They noted that while we don’t yet know Musk’s motive, the move could potentially give DOGE the power to turn off all kinds of government payments in a targeted way. They said we now must establish if Musk is seeking to carry out what Trump tried via his federal funding freeze: Turn off government payments previously authorized by Congress. The White House rescinded the freeze after a national outcry, but Trump’s spokesperson vowed the hunt for spending to halt will continue. The former officials are asking: Is this Treasury power grab a way to execute that?

“Anybody who would have access to these systems is in a position to turn off funding selectively,” said Michael Linden, a former OMB official who is now director of Families Over Billionaires, a group fighting Trump’s tax cuts for the rich. “The only reason Musk wants to get himself in there must be because he wants to turn some things off.”

These officials describe these systems as almost akin to a series of faucets. Congress, by authorizing payments, fills the tanks and decides where the water will ultimately flow. The team overseen by the now-departing Lebryk in effect is in control of the spigots, these officials said.

What also alarms these officials is that this is unfolding even as a debt ceiling crisis looms. When the government is on the verge of defaulting on its obligations, these officials tell me, it’s Lebryk and his team who carefully monitor the situation to determine, to the greatest extent possible, on what date it will no longer be able to meet its obligations. This team monitors the water levels, these officials say, noting that this is how Treasury knows what to say in those letters that periodically warn Congress that a breach is approaching.

As it happens, this is precisely why we want career, nonpolitical civil servants to be in charge of the spigots. To put it delicately, this is some really complicated shit, and we want the process to be administered in a totally nonpoliticized way. Letting someone like Musk anywhere near it risks corrupting it quite deeply.

“The payment systems are controlled by a small number of career officials precisely to protect them and the full faith and credit of the United States from political interference,” said Jesse Lee, who was a senior adviser to the National Economic Council under President Joe Biden. Or as Linden put it: “This is exactly the kind of thing you do not want political appointees getting involved in.”

Trump Crash Rhetoric Knocked By 'Miracle On Hudson' Pilot

Jan 31, 2025, 1:50 pm EST

Pilot Sully Sullenberger, who famously landed a damaged plane on the Hudson River in New York in 2009, said he was "disgusted" but "not surprised" by President Donald Trump's point-scoring rhetoric surrounding this week's crash in Washington.

Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger became a national hero after calmly piloting his US Airways airliner onto the water following a bird strike, in an episode remembered as the "Miracle on the Hudson."

A 2016 film "Sully," starring Tom Hanks and directed by Clint Eastwood, additionally wowed audiences with its account of his emergency landing.

The American science funding catastrophe

By Scott Aaronson | Jan 30, 2025

https://scottaaronson.blog/?p=8609

It’s been almost impossible to get reliable information this week, but here’s what my sources are telling me:

There is still a complete freeze on money being disbursed from the US National Science Foundation. Well, there’s total chaos in the federal government much more broadly, a lot of it more immediately consequential than the science freeze, but I’ll stick for now to my little corner of the universe.

The funding freeze has continued today, despite the fact that Trump supposedly rescinded it yesterday after a mass backlash. Basically, program directors remain in a state of confusion, paralysis, and fear. Where laws passed by Congress order them to do one thing, but the new Executive Orders seem to order the opposite, they’re simply doing nothing, waiting for clarification, and hoping to preserve their jobs.

Hopefully the funding will restart in a matter of days, after NSF and other agencies go through and cancel any expense that can be construed as DEI-related. Hopefully this will be like the short-lived Muslim travel ban of 2017: a “shock-and-awe” authoritarian diktat that thrills the base but quickly melts on contact with the reality of how our civilization works.

The alternative is painful to contemplate. If the current freeze drags on for months, tens of thousands of grad students and postdocs will no longer get stipends, and will be forced to quit. Basic science in the US will essentially grind to a halt — and even if it eventually restarts, an entire cohort of young physicists, mathematicians, and biologists will have been lost, while China and other countries race ahead in those fields.

Also, even if the funding does restart, the NSF and other federal agencies are now under an indefinite hiring freeze. If not quickly lifted, this will shrink these agencies and cripple their ability to carry out their missions.

If you voted for Trump, because you wanted to take a hammer to the woke deep state or whatever, then please understand: you may or may not have realized you were voting for this, exactly, but this is what you’ve gotten. In place of professionals who you dislike and who are sometimes systematically wrong, the American spaceship is now being piloted by drunken baboons, mashing the controls to see what happens. I hope you like the result.

Meanwhile, to anyone inside or outside the NSF who has more information about this rapidly-evolving crisis: I strongly encourage you to share whatever you know in the comments section. Or get in touch with me by email. I’ll of course respect all wishes for anonymity, and I won’t share anything without permission. But you now have a chance — some might even say an enviable chance — to put your loyalty to science and your country above your fear of a bully.

Firing everyone associated with investigating or prosecuting J6ers or Trump himself? Well, he's the president. Halting funding for programs that you yourselves authorized a few months ago? Everyone does it. Elon Musk and his crew mysteriously taking over the Treasury's payment system? It's all fine. We trust Elon. Threatening Denmark over Greenland? Boys will be boys. Removing mpox from the CDC site because it's mostly a virus of gay men? Huh. Starting up a scam crypto empire right before the inauguration? Man's gotta eat. Opening the floodgates on two California dams in winter and sending billions of gallons of water south to soak into a dry lakebed and be wasted—all on a whim? I'll have to get back to you. Pardoning the founder of the most notorious online drug trafficking site on the planet? Uh huh. Nominating half a dozen singularly unqualified nominees to run critical government departments? The president should get the staff he wants. Ending Secret Service protection for a few people he personally dislikes? Whatevs. Gulf of America? Why not?

With a few exceptions I can count on one hand, no Republican has raised so much as a peep about any of this. Trump is the boss and that's that. It's a poltroonish performance of astonishing depth.

Here's what your guy did...

I've dealt with thousands of Trumptards and they all taught me the same lesson — every one of them. I won't tell you what it is but I will hint: Your problems are caused by your behavior, not by the President. But here is a problem that the President is causing:

Alienating allies and partners means “America First” will be “America Alone.”

Trump is single-handedly reneging on 80 years of American work to persuade others to trust and rely on the United States. He is remodeling the international image of the U.S. after himself: impulsive, self-seeking, short-sighted, and untrustworthy. First-term Trump might have been dismissed as an aberration, brought to office by a fluke of America’s archaic Electoral College. A returned Trump, this time empowered by a genuine popular-vote victory, cannot be so readily dismissed. He obviously represents something deep in American politics, something likely enduring, something that other countries must take into account.

Mexico and Canada must ultimately suffer whatever the U.S. imposes on them. They cannot relocate; they have few credible options. Mexico has learned from especially bitter experience that any attempt to strike its own international deals will be vetoed by the U.S., using force if necessary.

Canadians have had an easier time, summed up by the cynical local joke: “The Americans are our best friends whether we like it or not.” But other countries have more options.

Over the past five centuries, the Euro-Atlantic world has seen the rise of one great power after another: Habsburg Spain, Bourbon and Napoleonic France, Victorian Britain, Imperial and then Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union. Each of those powers was ultimately brought down because it frightened other powers into uniting against it.

The United States since 1945 tried a different way. It reconciled the world to its dominance in great part by using that dominance for the benefit of willing partners. The United States provided security, it opened markets, it welcomed the improving prosperity of fellow democracies and like-minded allies. Who would hazard the costs and dangers of uniting to topple such a benign hegemon—at least, so long as the hegemon remained benign?

In the 21st century, the United States faces a new kind of adversary. Past rivals might have matched the U.S. in wealth, technology, or military strength, but not in all three. China today is the nearest peer power the U.S. has faced since Americans battled the British Empire in the War of 1812. To balance China while keeping the peace, the U.S. will need more and better friends than ever before. Trump is doing his utmost instead to alienate and offend those friends.

“America First” means “America Alone.” This week’s trade wars are steps on the way to future difficulties—and, unless a great infusion of better judgment or better luck suddenly occurs, future disasters.

The geopolitical verdict on the first Trump presidency could be written with a breath of relief: “Bad as it was, it could have been worse.” On the present trajectory, the verdict on the second may not come with any relief at all.

What does Trump really want?

What's the end game here?

the craziest thing is that it’s not even very clear what Trump wants to happen. the fentanyl thing is obviously an excuse, the flow of Canadian fentanyl into the US is insignificant. so what does he want? https://t.co/3ijwJUa0xr

— Armand Domalewski (@ArmandDoma) February 2, 2025

Trump doesn't want anything. He just wants the tariffs. He's convinced they can raise vast sums of money that will let him enact tax cuts later this year, and he likes that. That's it. There's no 4-D chess. He just wants the money, and he either doesn't know or doesn't care that he's raising it from Americans, not foreigners.

And why Canada, Mexico, and China? For the same reason Willie Sutton robbed banks: because that's where the money is. Those three countries account for nearly half of all US imports, so they're the ones that got held up.

There's no need to overthink this.

Trump’s Gitmo Detention Center Would Be Bigger Than History’s Worst Concentration Camps

By Pedro Gerson | Feb 02, 2025, 10:00 AM

In a press conference on Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced that his administration will build a 30,000-bed detention center in Guantanamo Bay. His office also issued a memorandum.
https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/expanding-migr
ant-operations-center-at-naval-station-guantanamo-bay-to-full-capacity

The Tule Lake Japanese internment camp, for example, had a capacity of around 18,000. If the Trump administration actually builds the detention camp in Guantanamo, it’ll double in size Auschwitz-Birkenau’s original design and be bigger than Dachau and Treblinka combined.

When Trump claims he needs more beds for detainees, it’s useless to point out that undocumented entries had dropped to one of the lowest levels in recent years by the end of 2024.

6ixStringJack, can you say gas chambers and crematoriums for Trump's Gitmo Detention Center? That way it does not get overfull.

So we’re having a trade war — and even the Wall Street Journal, which normally finds a way to rationalize whatever Trump does, calls it “the dumbest trade war in history.” We have some real trade (and national security) issues with China, but China is getting off lightly; the brunt of Trump’s tariffs will fall instead on Canada and Mexico.

Personnel affiliated with Elon Musk have sought access to a highly sensitive Treasury Department payment system. That system, which is maintained by non-political staff, disperses trillions of dollars each year.

Senator Wyden wrote in a new letter: “To put it bluntly, these payment systems simply cannot fail, and any politically-motivated meddling in them risks severe damage to our country and the economy. I am deeply concerned that following the federal grant and loan freeze earlier this week, these officials associated with Musk may have intended to access these payment systems to illegally withhold payments to any number of programs. I can think of no good reason why political operators who have demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law would need access to these sensitive, mission-critical systems … The federal government is in a financially precarious position, currently utilizing accounting maneuvers to continue paying its bills since it reached the debt limit at the beginning of the year. I am concerned that mismanagement of these payment systems could threaten the full faith and credit of the United States.”

His letter continued: “The press has previously reported that Musk was denied a high-level clearance to access the government’s most sensitive secrets. I am concerned that Musk’s enormous business operation in China — a country whose intelligence agencies have stolen vast amounts of sensitive data about Americans, including U.S. government employee data by hacking U.S. government systems — endangers U.S. cybersecurity and creates conflicts of interest that make his access to these systems a national security risk.”

Elon Musk’s lead hatchet man on his DOGE team was one of his first hires at SpaceX, Steve Davis — who also ran a frozen yogurt store in Washington DC. “I like to do something new about every six to nine months and a lot of them fail.”

He describes his relationship with Musk: “Look here, Davis, get this done!”

At a gathering of libertarian devotees of Ayn Rand, Davis said: “I know nothing about politics.”

At Twitter, Davis was credited for his “success in bringing costs down by any means necessary”:

Elon says he’ll shut down all payments to Lutheran charities

Does Elon Musk know what he is doing?

The @DOGE team is rapidly shutting down these illegal payments

https://t.co/GabhBL7gxf

Crackpot Gen. Mike Flynn searched for grants to any organization with Lutheran in its name and declared them all corrupt. What does he have against Lutherans?

The Lutheran groups provide foster care, group homes, meals, and that sort of thing all over the country. You know, charity and humanitarian services.

So why does Elon say he's "rapidly" shutting down these "illegal payments"? There's nothing illegal about them and DOGE has no authority to stop them anyway. I assume he's just fluffing Flynn, but you never know. Does he really plan to just stop Treasury from writing checks to groups he disapproves of?

Out of the blob that SECOND just posted, this here is the scary part

Well, maybe the answer to that scary situation is to shut off the tap to money wasting programs, eh?

How about shutting off the tap for Social Security and Medicare to all Trumptards? And states controlled by Trumptard governors, i.e. West Virginia and Indiana, deserve to have shut off their Federal funds. They are a waste of money.
