If the Deep State is out to get Trump, why aren't more officials speaking up like Bolton?

President Donald Trump and his allies have continually railed about how the "Deep State" of unelected national security bureaucrats has quietly worked to undermine the Trump presidency.

But the new allegations in a book by former national security adviser John Bolton turn that formulation on its head. If Bolton is to be believed — Trump calls him a liar — plenty of career diplomats, soldiers and spies kept quiet as they watched Trump abuse his office.

In Bolton's telling, members of the so-called Deep State, including senior intelligence and defense officials, knew about actions by Trump that were unethical if not illegal — and said nothing. That would mean the press, the public, and House impeachment investigators were kept in the dark.

Such an operation might have been too risky in Moscow's view under any other US president. But the Kremlin apparently didn't fear a strong reaction. It looks so far as if the downside did not materialize.

Beijing, too, is running roughshod over America's interests and America's friends, as if Washington simply did not exist; as if the world's most powerful country could be safely ignored.

China has decided to essentially ignore the commitment it made to the people of Hong Kong, to the United States, and to the rest of the world 23 years ago, when the UK transferred control to China.

You are right about Trump. He has decided that the U.S.A. does not need a world spanning military. The National Guard will be enough. Trump threatened late Tuesday to veto a $740 billion defense policy bill if it included bipartisan language mandating the removal of the names of Confederate leaders from military installations. In stark contrast, Senate Republicans signal to Trump to back down on defense bill veto threat. 1kiki, the GOP doesn't share Trump and your beliefs about Hong Kong, Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, Venezuela, Vietnam, etc. I think I know how this story will end: Trump signs the Defense bill, but most of the money is wasted because of ineptitude.

The stakes of Trump's tax return case couldn't be higher

As CNN legal analyst Elie Honig points out "In total, six different federal courts -- three district courts and three courts of appeals panels -- have heard these cases, and all six have ruled against Trump." Moreover, court cases stemming from corruption in the administration of Warren G. Harding -- known as the Teapot Dome scandal -- would seem to directly apply. A subsequent 1924 law states that the Treasury Secretary "shall furnish" such tax information requested by relevant congressional committee, which Trump's Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin refused to do, citing no "legitimate legislative purpose."

But there is a clear public and legislative interest in finding out whether Trump has hidden business dealings with the Russians, which might explain his strange but persistent reluctance to confront Vladimir Putin on clear matters of US national interest.

Before Trump's political career, his son Eric repeatedly bragged about being able to bypass American banks -- many of which refused to do business with the Trump organization -- because the company could get all the money it needed from Russia. In 2008, his son Don Jr. told a real estate conference "Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets ... we see a lot of money pouring in from Russia." And Reuters has reported that 63 Russians invested nearly $100 million in Trump buildings.

Russia has a notorious reputation for money laundering and two frequent destinations are luxury real estate and casinos -- both of which the Trump organization has operated in the past.

This is far from an academic concern. CNN has tallied no less than 25 times President Trump has been strangely soft on Russia -- from denying Moscow interfered in US elections to his benefit, to suggesting it could keep the conquered Ukrainian province of Crimea, to undermining Obama-era sanctions, to withdrawing US troops from Syria, to praising pro-Russian leaders in Europe, to railing against NATO.

If Vance is allowed to acquire copies of Trump’s tax returns, a number of people will be able to inspect copies. Leaks then are not unthinkable, but they are unlikely. Similarly, leaks from people at Mazars with access to Trump’s tax returns are also possible but unlikely. Leaks from Mazars could have happened already. In short, even if the Supreme Court rebuffs Trump’s claims in Vance, don’t hold your breath awaiting more information about his tax returns. Most likely, it will be a while before we know any details, and portions of his returns may remain forever secret.

On the other hand, the Public knows everything about Democratic Presidents and Presidential candidates because they aren't cheating on their taxes. Republican V.P. Mike Pence is not cheating, either. Trump was told that Russia was using Giuliani to spread disinfo to influence the election.

What did he do? He encouraged Rudy’s efforts and welcomed the help from Russia.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because it is. The same thing happened in 2016.
