November election will drive Texas GOP future
www.houstonchronicle.com/news/politics/texas/article/November-election
-will-drive-Texas-GOP-future-9228177.php

By Mike Ward, Updated: September 17, 2016 8:28pm

AUSTIN – Though the Texas GOP officially is onboard for Donald Trump, some Republican officials and consultants privately speculate that a win by Democrat Hillary Clinton could be better for the party.

Having Clinton in the White House, they say, would allow Texas Republicans to continue to use Washington's excesses and "overreach" to solidify their ranks and help fundraising, while a Trump presidency would add uncertainty to the GOP cause.

With less than 50 days until Election Day, even as top state Republicans are solidly behind "the orange-haired guy at the top of the ticket," bigger questions loom for a party that in recent years has turned hard right under a tea-party onslaught that has pushed aside many centrists and "compassionate conservatives."

One thing on which most Texas Republicans seem to agree: The winner in November election could reshape the state party.

"If Trump loses, the Republicans will have a common enemy in Hillary Clinton, but they may find themselves divided on a number of issues that have come up during this campaign," said Thomas Brunell, a political scientist at the University of Texas at Dallas. "If Trump wins, the factions of the party that have come out in this campaign will have to come together to determine the future of the party. And that's when you could see the current party break up or reformulate itself, if it comes to that."

Recent polls show Trump at best holding a seven-point lead over Clinton in the red state stronghold of Texas, where Mitt Romney won over Barack Obama by 16 points four years ago.

A Texas Lyceum Poll released Thursday revealed Trump's lead in a four-way race shrinks significantly and is a statistical dead heat, with Trump ahead of Clinton by just one percentage point among registered voters. In a two-way race, Clinton pulls ahead of Trump among those same voters, by a margin of 39 to 35 percent, a surprising figure in a state that has not had a Democrat elected to statewide office since 1994 and has not voted for a Democrat for president since 1976.

"Registered voters are more diverse than the pool of voters who historically show up in Texas elections, but the combination of the slow march of demographic change and Trump's rhetoric appears to have made Texas' registered voter pool more Democratic than we have seen in previous presidential races," said Joshua Blank, the poll's research director.

1kiki's "Independents"

A salient point I gleaned from five-thirty-eight.

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/was-the-democratic-primary-a-close
-call-or-a-landslide
/
Furthermore, although Sanders voters are quite liberal, a lot of them aren’t Democrats, or at least don’t like to identify themselves as Democrats. Clinton crushed Sanders among self-identified Democrats, winning them by 27 percentage points, based on exit polls. But Sanders won independents who voted in the Democratic primary by 31 percentage points.
... it turned out that there were more than 13 million people who signed up for his “revolution.” A lot of those voters are young, furthermore, so their power may grow in the years ahead. ... Sanders accomplished something almost as important, unlocking a heretofore underappreciated political coalition that could determine a lot of future elections, possibly even including the general election this year.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Bernie was making promises he has no idea how he would pay for.

Beyond VERY vaporous statements, so did FDR.

In this time of unprecedented economic and social distress the Democratic Party declares its conviction that the chief causes of this condition were the disastrous policies pursued by our government since the World War, of economic isolation, fostering the merger of competitive businesses into monopolies and encouraging the indefensible expansion and contraction of credit for private profit at the expense of the public.

Those who were responsible for these policies have abandoned the ideals on which the war was won and thrown away the fruits of victory, thus rejecting the greatest opportunity in history to bring peace, prosperity, and happiness to our people and to the world.

They have ruined our foreign trade; destroyed the values of our commodities and products, crippled our banking system, robbed millions of our people of their life savings, and thrown millions more out of work, produced wide-spread poverty and brought the government to a state of financial distress unprecedented in time of peace.

The only hope for improving present conditions, restoring employment, affording permanent relief to the people, and bringing the nation back to the proud position of domestic happiness and of financial, industrial, agricultural and commercial leadership in the world lies in a drastic change in economic governmental policies.

We believe that a party platform is a covenant with the people to have [sic] faithfully kept by the party when entrusted with power, and that the people are entitled to know in plain words the terms of the contract to which they are asked to subscribe. We hereby declare this to be the platform of the Democratic Party:

The Democratic Party solemnly promises by appropriate action to put into effect the principles, policies, and reforms herein advocated, and to eradicate the policies, methods, and practices herein condemned.
We advocate an immediate and drastic reduction of governmental expenditures by abolishing useless commissions and offices, consolidating departments and bureaus, and eliminating extravagance to accomplish a saving of not less than twenty-five per cent in the cost of the Federal Government. And we call upon the Democratic Party in the states to make a zealous effort to achieve a proportionate result.

We favor maintenance of the national credit by a federal budget annually balanced on the basis of accurate executive estimates within revenues, raised by a system of taxation levied on the principle of ability to pay.

We advocate a sound currency to be preserved at all hazards and an international monetary conference called on the invitation of our government to consider the rehabilitation of silver and related questions.

We advocate a competitive tariff for revenue with a fact-finding tariff commission free from executive interference, reciprocal tariff agreements with other nations, and an international economic conference designed to restore international trade and facilitate exchange.

We advocate the extension of federal credit to the states to provide unemployment relief wherever the diminishing resources of the states makes it impossible for them to provide for the needy; expansion of the federal program of necessary and useful construction effected [sic] with a public interest, such as adequate flood control and waterways.

We advocate the spread of employment by a substantial reduction in the hours of labor, the encouragement of the shorter week by applying that principle in government service; we advocate advance planning of public works.

We advocate unemployment and old-age insurance under state laws.

We favor the restoration of agriculture, the nation's basic industry; better financing of farm mortgages through recognized farm bank agencies at low rates of interest on an amortization plan, giving preference to credits for the redemption of farms and homes sold under foreclosure.

Extension and development of the Farm co-operative movement and effective control of crop surpluses so that our farmers may have the full benefit of the domestic market.

The enactment of every constitutional measure that will aid the farmers to receive for their basic farm commodities prices in excess of cost.

We advocate a Navy and an Army adequate for national defense, based on a survey of all facts affecting the existing establishments, that the people in time of peace may not be burdened by an expenditure fast approaching a billion dollars annually.

We advocate strengthening and impartial enforcement of the anti-trust laws, to prevent monopoly and unfair trade practices, and revision thereof for the better protection of labor and the small producer and distributor.

The conservation, development, and use of the nation's water power in the public interest.

The removal of government from all fields of private enterprise except where necessary to develop public works and natural resources in the common interest.

We advocate protection of the investing public by requiring to be filed with the government and carried in advertisements of all offerings of foreign and domestic stocks and bonds true information as to bonuses, commissions, principal invested, and interests of the sellers.

Regulation to the full extent of federal power, of:

(a) Holding companies which sell securities in interstate commerce;

(b) Rates of utilities companies operating across State lines;

(c) Exchanges in securities and commodities. We advocate quicker methods of realizing on assets for the relief of depositors of suspended banks, and a more rigid supervision of national banks for the protection of depositors and the prevention of the use of their moneys in speculation to the detriment of local credits.

The severance of affiliated security companies from, and the divorce of the investment banking business from, commercial banks, and further restriction of federal reserve banks in permitting the use of federal reserve facilities for speculative purposes.

We advocate the full measure of justice and generosity for all war veterans who have suffered disability or disease caused by or resulting from actual service in time of war and for their dependents.

We advocate a firm foreign policy, including peace with all the world and the settlement of international disputes by arbitration; no interference in the internal affairs of other nations; and sanctity of treaties and the maintenance of good faith and of good will in financial obligations; adherence to the World Court with appending reservations; the Pact of Paris abolishing war as an instrument of national policy, to be made effective by provisions for consultation and conference in case of threatened violations of treaties.

International agreements for reduction of armaments and cooperation with nations of the Western Hemisphere to maintain the spirit of the Monroe Doctrine.

We oppose cancelation of the debts owing to the United States by foreign nations.

Independence for the Philippines; ultimate statehood for Puerto Rico.

The employment of American citizens in the operation of the Panama Canal.

Simplification of legal procedure and reorganization of the judicial system to make the attainment of justice speedy, certain, and at less cost.

Continuous publicity of political contributions and expenditures; strengthening of the Corrupt Practices Act and severe penalties for misappropriation of campaign funds.

We advocate the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment. To effect such repeal we demand that the Congress immediately propose a Constitutional Amendment to truly represent [sic] the conventions in the states called to act solely on that proposal; we urge the enactment of such measures by the several states as will actually promote temperance, effectively prevent the return of the saloon, and bring the liquor traffic into the open under complete supervision and control by the states.

We demand that the Federal Government effectively exercise its power to enable the states to protect themselves against importation of intoxicating liquors in violation of their laws.

Pending repeal, we favor immediate modification of the Volstead Act; to legalize the manufacture and sale of beer and other beverages of such alcoholic content as is permissible under the Constitution and to provide therefrom a proper and needed revenue.

We condemn the improper and excessive use of money in political activities.

We condemn paid lobbies of special interests to influence members of Congress and other public servants by personal contact.

We condemn action and utterances of high public officials designed to influence stock exchange prices.

We condemn the open and cover resistance of administrative officials to every effort made by Congressional Committees to curtail the extravagant expenditures of the Government and to revoke improvident subsidies granted to favorite interests.

We condemn the extravagance of the Farm Board, its disastrous action which made the Government a speculator in farm products, and the unsound policy of restricting agricultural products to the demands of domestic markets.

We condemn the usurpation of power by the State Department in assuming to pass upon foreign securities offered by international bankers as a result of which billions of dollars in questionable bonds have been sold to the public upon the implied approval of the Federal Government.

And in conclusion, to accomplish these purposes and to recover economic liberty, we pledge the nominees of this convention the best efforts of a great Party whose founder announced the doctrine which guides us now in the hour of our country's need: equal rights to all; special privilege to none.

In the course of a single conversation, I have been assured that Hillary is cunning and manipulative but also crass, clueless, and stunningly impolitic; that she is a hopelessly woolly-headed do-gooder and, at heart, a hardball litigator; that she is a base opportunist and a zealot convinced that God is on her side. What emerges is a cultural inventory of villainy rather than a plausible depiction of an actual person. There is NOTHING Hillary can do to chase away the phantom Hillary haunting 1kiki's brain.

I am sure that any statement about Hillary's policies sends 1kiki lunging for the keyboard in order to explain to me that Hillary Clinton’s policies are exactly what they DON’T like about her. But it is very clear to me that this is not the case with the majority of Hillary haters. The vast majority of messages and comments about HRC that I see consist almost solely of either personal attacks, false claims, childish conspiracy theories, assumptions of guilt by association or complaints about legislation passed by her husband decades ago. Almost none of the comments I see (or have received) even bother to address her current policy positions, and most of the small few that do either willfully misrepresent them, assume as a given that they are terrible or dismiss them altogether as mere political expediency.

There is NOTHING Hillary can do to chase away the phantom Hillary haunting 1kiki's brain.

And your old favorite standby, that thing that passes for argument in your brain - the ad hominem.

The problems I have with Hillary's policies I've made very, very clear - repeatedly. And the things I think are weakening her campaign - aside from the issues I have with it - I've also made very, very clear - repeatedly. Many of them are in the 'Hillary' thread which you've avoided since day 1 because you can't seem to grasp that Hillary has problems and baggage she needs to address. But some posts are found here as well.

And I've also said who I'm going to vote for multiple times as well.

But for sure, I'm not going to repeat my posts again. After all, you've ignored the first dozen times. One more post isn't going to magically fix your resolute refusal to read.

SO - BACK TO MY QUESTION ...

Chanting anti-Donald screeds isn't going to change anything. The people who are for Hillary will read them and probably agree, and maybe even get foam-at-the-mouth-angry over them - but it's not like they get Hilliary EXTRA votes. Meanwhile, the people who are going to vote for Donald either know and don't care, or they don't care to know.

All your anti-Donald posts are like squashing water.

The only way to improve Hillary's numbers is to figure out what's going wrong with HER campaign, stop doing whatever it is that's making things go wrong, and do something better instead. What could that be?

Don't bother asking sigkik who they are voting for. They won't put their neck out like that.

Such as when I asked them to come back here and stand up for their position against Hillary and for Drumph. Come back in four years and own up to their choice and what followed, either way the vote goes.

These trolls won't do it. Because they really are trolls and cowards at heart. Like Drumph, they cannot face the idea that they might be mistaken, and that reality will prove how very much wrong they are.

They are that insecure. Pure 100% cowards.

What Signy said, except I don't support Trump. My position has always been - and still is - anybody but Hillary. And my issue with her has always been - and still is - her inability to learn from her 'successes' - Iraq, Libya, Ukraine, Syria - and the fact that she's still committed to the same policies that brought them.

Hillary could pull down Trump during the debate. But even that might not work. Here is my experience from yesterday: Larry, the Republican next door, has told me many times that Obama was born in Kenya and that it is a well-documented fact, but when Trump said on Friday that "Back in 2008, Hillary Clinton started the birther controversy. I finished it. President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period." Larry claimed on Saturday that Larry had always been joking about Obama's birth. Birtherism originated with Hillary. Then Larry crossed his arms in an unconscious defensive move and went back inside. He was not talking to me anymore because I could not remember Larry's version of the past.

During the debates, Trump will do the same by reversing himself and loudly declaring his new position was always his position. Hillary had just not understood Trump's position because she was not as smart as Trump. At least in Trump's mind and his supporters' Trump will have won the argument. I know that is ad hominem, but we are talking about serious (and utterly silly) character flaws in Trump and his supporters.

Ad hominem (Latin for "to the person"), short for argumentum ad hominem, is a logical fallacy in which an argument is rebutted by attacking ... (an) attribute of the person making the argument, (ie the phantoms in my brain) or persons, associated with the argument, rather than attacking the substance of the argument itself.

Yes, your post fits the definition very nicely.

From the 1kiki smoke I can only make out one word: California. Is that correct? And I have never been able to make out the first word. Is it Trump?

You've failed to answer the OT questions I ask you, no matter how many times I ask them. Instead you post lies about unrelated things. And when I refute your posts, rather than man-up and say 'I was wrong', you indulge in ad hominem attacks. So, no, I feel absolute NO obligation to answer your question. I've talked about who I'm going to vote for many times,

Here, all the way back in December
Quote:

Who I vote for depends on who's on the ticket. If Bernie Sanders doesn't make it on the ticket, I will NOT be voting for Hillary, that warmongering, lying neocon-bitch in a Democratic pantsuit! I guess my choices would be Trump (because he's so gorram rich he doesn't need to sell himself to the highest contributor) or Jill Stein (Green Party). But that needs more thought.

Here, when Bernie was still running
Quote:

Still, it depends on who's running...
Hillary v Trump > Trump
Hillary v any other Republican > Jill Stein
Sanders v any other Republican > Sanders
Sanders v Trump > ???

Here, before the conventions

Tulsi Gabbard deserves a campaign contribution. So does Russ Feingold, who is running again for Senate.

Here, after the Presidential nominees had been decided

Basically, you don't like third-party votes? I use third-party votes strategically: I'd vote for Jill Stein, but ONLY if Hillary has a solid lock on CA.

Here in July
Quote:

Anybody but Hillary. It'll be like my vote for "not Obama" last election: it depends on how the polling shapes up. If Hillary is a slam-dunk in CA, then my vote REALLY doesn't count, and I'll vote for Jill Stein (Green) ... who is, by the way, the REAL first female Presidential nominee (2012), not Hillary. If OTOH Trumps stands a prayer of taking CA, I'll probably vote Trump.
I would have voted for Sanders if he'd been on the ticket. But since he isn't mine is a protest vote.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=60586

So MAL4, I'm sorry you can't read or can't comprehend or can't remember or whatever it is that prevented you from knowing what I was saying about my vote.

Maybe you just had a "Hillary moment" and blacked out ... for eight months?

Well, just in case you STILL haven't gotten it, if Trump is within about 10 percentage points of Hillary in CA, I'll vote for Trump. If he's so far behind Hillary that he doesn't stand a chance in CA, then I'll vote for Jill Stein.

Got it?

Today, Chris Christie casually peddled the obvious lie that Donald Trump gave up on birtherism after President Obama released his long-form birth certificate in 2011. This is easily fact checkable. There are tweets. There's video. That does not stop Christie from lying for Trump:

This is why Americans hate politics. A sitting governor goes on national television and when he is called out for an obvious falsehood, he simply repeats the inaccurate talking points over and over.

....This is such bogus spin that we have to wonder how Christie manages to say it with a straight face. Clearly Christie is either lying or he is so misinformed that he has no business appearing on television.

If you want the evidence that what is wrong with Trump has rubbed off on Christie then the Trump's tweets and videos promoting Birtherism are here:

The problem is how can Hillary avoid losing even more of her supporters? And how can she gain new supporters from the pool of undecided/ independent ones?

Election Update: Democrats Should Panic … If The Polls Still Look Like This In A Week

Hillary Clinton’s lead in the polls has been declining for several weeks, and now we’re at the point where it’s not much of a lead at all. National polls show Clinton only 1 or 2 percentage points ahead of Donald Trump, on average. And the state polling situation isn’t really any better for her. On Thursday alone, polls were released showing Clinton behind in Ohio, Iowa and Colorado — and with narrow, 3-point leads in Michigan and Virginia, two states once thought to be relatively safe for her.

It’s also become clearer that Clinton’s “bad weekend” — which included describing half of Trump supporters as a “basket of deplorables” on Friday, and a health scare (followed by news that she had been diagnosed with pneumonia) on Sunday — has affected the polls. Prior to the weekend, Clinton’s decline had appeared to be leveling off, with the race settling into a Clinton lead of 3 or 4 percentage points. But over the past seven days, Clinton’s win probability has declined from 70 percent to 60 percent in our polls-only forecast and by a similar amount, from 68 percent to 59 percent, in our polls-plus forecast.

That’s not to imply the events of the weekend were necessarily catastrophic for Clinton: In the grand scheme of things, they might not matter all that much (although polling from YouGov suggests that Clinton’s health is in fact a concern to voters). But when you’re only ahead by 3 or 4 points, and when some sequence of events causes you to lose another 1 or 2 points, the Electoral College probabilities can shift pretty rapidly. A lot of light blue states on our map have turned pink, meaning that Trump is now a narrow favorite there instead of Clinton:

When a candidate has a rough stretch like this in the polls, you’ll sometimes see his or her supporters pass through the various stages of grief before accepting the results, beginning with a heavy dose of “unskewing” or cherry-picking of various polls. In this case, however, the shift in the race is apparent in a large number of high-quality surveys, and doesn’t depend much on the methodology one chooses. FiveThirtyEight, Real Clear Politics and Huffington Post Pollster all show similar results in their national polling averages, for example, with Clinton leading by only 1 to 3 percentage points over Trump.

This potentially ignores a more important question, however. Sure, Clinton might lead by only a percentage point or two right now — with a similarly perilous advantage in the Electoral College. But is that necessarily the best prediction for how things will turn out in November?

Our various models differ on this question. Polls-only assumes that there’s still a lot of uncertainty about the outcome. But it also mostly assumes1 that the current condition of the race — Clinton ahead by around 2 points — is a statistically unbiased prediction of the Nov. 8 outcome. In other words, it assumes that Clinton is as likely to continue losing ground as opposed to regaining ground from this point forward.

Polls-plus, by contrast, discounts short-term shifts in the polls by hedging them with an index based on economic conditions. Even at this fairly late stage of the campaign, about 30 percent of the polls-plus forecast is based on the economic index rather than the polls. But this year, the economic index assumes the election will be very close. Thus, the recent tightening of the race is not much of a surprise to polls-plus, and it doesn’t differ much from the polls-only forecast at this point.

Another way to hedge against short-term swings in the polls would be to assume that polls tend to revert to where they’d been previously. Over the course of the campaign, Clinton has been ahead by an average of about 5 percentage points, although she has ranged between being virtually tied with Trump at her worst moments to being ahead of him by as much as 10 points at her best moments. In fact, the election has tended to ebb and flow between these boundaries like a sine wave:

If we had a model like this — basically, a version of polls-plus that partially reverted the current polls to the long-term mean of Clinton +5 — it would show her as about a 70 percent favorite instead of a 60 percent favorite. But would that be a good set of assumptions? Does the fact that Clinton has usually led Trump by a larger margin than she leads him now mean anything?

This is a complicated question, and one that we might want to revisit over the next couple of weeks. But the short answer is… I don’t know. We know that many news events — most notably, the political conventions — produce short-term “bounces” in the polls that partly or wholly reverse themselves after a few weeks. There were also some examples of this in 2012. Mitt Romney’s position improved by several percentage points following his first debate in Denver against President Obama, but his gains soon proved fleeting. Media coverage of the campaign — which tends to rally behind whichever candidate is gaining in the polls until it tires of the story and switches to scrutinizing the frontrunner — could also contribute to such swings back and forth.

So it’s plausible that Clinton’s “bad weekend” could be one of those events that has a relatively short-lived impact on the campaign. As if to put to the question to the test, Trump upended the news cycle on Friday by relitigating the conspiracy theory that Obama wasn’t born in the United States. (Trump finally acknowledged that Obama was born here, but only after falsely accusing Clinton of having started the “birther” rumors.) If voters were reacting to the halo of negative coverage surrounding Clinton rather than to the substance of reporting about Clinton’s health or her “deplorables” comments, she could regain ground as Trump endures a few tough news cycles of his own. Over the course of the general election so far, whichever candidate has been the dominant subject in the news has tended to lose ground in the polls, according to an analysis by Larry Sabato, Kyle Kondik and Geoffrey Skelley.

All of this is tricky, though, because we still don’t have a great sense for where the long-term equilibrium of the race is, or even whether there’s an equilibrium at all — and we probably never will because of the unusual nature of Trump’s candidacy. Perhaps Trump isn’t that different from a “generic Republican” after all. Or perhaps (more plausibly in my view) he is a very poor candidate who costs the Republicans substantially, but that Clinton is nearly as bad a candidate and mostly offsets this effect. Still, I’d advise waiting a week or so to see whether Clinton’s current dip in the polls sticks as the news moves on from her “bad weekend” to other subjects.

Let me just point out that the author left out vital relevant facts in the opinion piece. Doing that is known as cherry-picking. And whether you do that in the news, in discussion, in debate or in opinion, when you distort the facts, you've changed the nature of your communication into propaganda. Trump’s Behavior Similar To Male Chimpanzee, Says Jane Goodall. Well, she’s the expert.

Quotes from “When Donald Meets Hillary”
www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2016/10/who-will-win/497561/

Donald Trump’s antics remind famed anthropologist Jane Goodall of the primates she spent decades studying in the wild.

“In many ways the performances of Donald Trump remind me of male chimpanzees and their dominance rituals,” Goodall told The Atlantic. “In order to impress rivals, males seeking to rise in the dominance hierarchy perform spectacular displays: stamping, slapping the ground, dragging branches, throwing rocks.”

Goodall added, “the more vigorous and imaginative the display, the faster the individual is likely to rise in the hierarchy, and the longer he is likely to maintain that position.”

To date, instead of physical displays, the Republican presidential nominee has stuck to verbal ones ? bragging about his penis, launching personal attacks and resorting to racist and sexist insults.

In her book My Life With the Chimpanzees, Goodall told the story of “Mike,” a chimp who maintained his dominance by kicking a series of kerosene cans ahead of him as he moved down a road, creating confusion and noise that made his rivals flee and cower. Goodall said she would be thinking of Mike as she watched the upcoming debates.

I asked Governor Martin O’Malley how he would be preparing to debate Trump if he’d won the nomination. He said, “I’d start by thinking of him as a monkey with a machine gun.” By that he meant an adversary who is all the more dangerous because you can’t predict which direction he’ll be facing when he pulls the trigger.

Yanno what?? You CAN stop the signal. Especially somewhere between the ear and the brain.

I will grant you all day long that Trump is a fundamentally flawed person. I can name you three or four SERIOUS flaws (without referencing fictional works) that should give anyone and everyone pause about voting for Trump. OTOH, I can name you a similar number of equally serious character flaws on Hillary's side that should make anyone hesitate to vote for Hillary, and that's not including her health. So, if I can objectively concede to Trump's obvious flaws and still think that Hillary is worse, what does that say about Hillary?

Well then, instead of arguing to the amorphous "they", how about arguing to me? Because however you characterize the Trump supporter (white, male, undereducated, poor, Democrat-hater; evangelical) you can't say any of that about me: female, educated (in the sciences), upper 5%, atheist, lifelong registered Democrat, daughter of immigrants: the complete demographic antithesis of "the Trump supporter".

Yanno, I voted for Bill (once) and Obama (once) and have been a registered Democrat my entire life, rarely voting against party lines unless the candidates (Bill, the second time; Obama the second time, and Feinstein any time since 2002) demand otherwise.

Hillary (and her backers), IMHO, demands otherwise.

Poor Hillary. She has spent so much time getting into the Big Boys (internationalist/neocon) Club, she no longer knows what or who she stands for. But money... yanno... that is a powerful and continuing influence.

So, care to argue point for point against a real opponent, instead of your constant references to fictional characters? I'm open to having my mind changed, but it's sure not going to be by cheap arguments.

In a Quinnipiac poll from last week, Clinton over Trump by a 55-34 margin from likely voters 18-34.

But when Stein and Johnson were included, as they will be in the real election, Clinton received 31 percent, Trump 26 percent. Johnson came in second with 29 percent and Stein 15 percent. Among people who are left of center, Jill Stein is an obvious choice if Hillary Clinton isn't your cup of tea. But Gary Johnson doesn't make any sense at all for Left-wingers. He wants to repeal Obamacare, slash Social Security, supports Citizens United, and doesn't want to do anything about climate change. He's a pretty ripe target for Hillary to get votes from his left-wing supporters who know only that Johnson is for legalizing marijuana.

www.nytimes.com/2016/09/19/opinion/vote-as-if-it-matters.html?_r=0

Paul Krugman says 29 percent of millennials would cast their ballots now for a third party, but few know what it stands for.

Does it make sense to vote for Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate for president? Sure, as long as you believe two things. First, you have to believe that it makes no difference at all whether Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump moves into the White House — because one of them will. Second, you have to believe that America will be better off in the long run if we eliminate environmental regulation, abolish the income tax, do away with public schools, and dismantle Social Security and Medicare — which is what the Libertarian platform calls for.

But do 29 percent of Americans between 18 and 34 believe these things? I doubt it. Yet that, according to a recent Quinnipiac poll, is the share of millennial voters who say that they would vote for Johnson if the election took place now. And the preponderance of young Americans who say they’ll back Johnson or Jill Stein, the Green Party nominee, appear to be citizens who would support Clinton in a two-way race; including the minor party candidates cuts her margin among young voters from 21 points to just 5.

How many people have actually read the Libertarian platform? www.lp.org/platform

As I said, it calls for abolition of the income tax and the privatization of almost everything the government does, including education. If parents don’t want their children educated, or want them indoctrinated in a cult, or put them to work in a sweatshop instead of learning to read? Not our problem.

What really struck me, however, was what the platform says about the environment. It opposes any kind of regulation; instead, it argues that we can rely on the courts. Is a giant corporation poisoning the air you breathe or the water you drink? Just sue. Ordinary citizens against teams of high-priced corporate lawyers — what could go wrong?

It’s really hard to believe that young voters who supported Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary think any of this is a good idea. But Johnson and Stein have received essentially no media scrutiny, so that voters have no idea what they stand for. And their parties’ names sound nice: who among us is against liberty? The truth, that the Libertarian Party essentially stands for a return to all the worst abuses of the Gilded Age, is not out there.

Meanwhile, of course, it does make a huge difference which of the two realistic prospects for the presidency wins, and not just because of the difference in their temperaments and the degree to which they respect or have contempt for democratic norms. Their policy positions are drastically different, too.

True, much of what Trump says is incoherent: In his policy proposals, trillion dollar tax breaks are here today, gone tomorrow, back the day after. But anyone who calls him a “populist” isn’t looking at the general thrust of his ideas, or at whom he has chosen as economic advisers. Trump’s brain trust, such as it is, is composed of hard-line, right-wing supply-siders — whom even Republican economists have called “charlatans and cranks” — for whom low taxes on the rich are the overwhelming priority.

Meanwhile, Clinton has staked out the most progressive policy positions ever advocated by a presidential candidate. There’s no reason to believe that these positions are insincere, that she would revert to 1990s policies in office: What some are now calling the “new liberal economics” has sunk deep roots in the Democratic Party, and dominates the ranks of Clinton’s advisers.

Now, maybe you don’t care. Maybe you consider center-left policies just as bad as hard-right policies. And maybe you have somehow managed to reconcile that disdain with tolerance for libertarian free-market mania. If so, by all means vote for Johnson. But don’t vote for a minor-party candidate to make a statement. Nobody cares.

Remember, George W. Bush lost the popular vote in 2000, but somehow ended up in the White House anyway in part thanks to the Ralph Nader vote — and nonetheless proceeded to govern as if he had won a landslide. Can you really imagine a triumphant Trump showing restraint out of respect for all those libertarian votes?

Nothing much is actually happening in this race. Hillary Clinton has had a fairly steady, yet tiny, 3.5 percent lead over Trump all year. Allow me to retract my previous statement and submit the following: So, by your brilliant response, I take it you are supporting either Jill Stein or Gary Johnson/Bill Weld. I stand corrected and hereby withdraw the aforementioned comment. It was both childish and out of order. I apologize, unreservedly.

Except for "the ever humble" I was being sarcastic with my response. If we can't discuss things civilly, then I suggest keeping our distance.

Yep. My bubbly fucking charm! I just feel good and fucking nasty right now!

Can't stop the emotion, must......get....back.....into.......my....

You assume that my "fuck-you attitude" is due to drunkenness. Well, it is not. There was a time I would have discussed these matters with the calm
of a nun during high mass, but on more than one occasion I have been insulted and ridiculed by you and Sig without the slightest provocation on my part other than to express opinions. Now I'm all for turning the other cheek when it is warranted, but even I have my boiling point.

I want no apology or retraction. And I will offer no apology or retraction. Let's leave it at that and go about our business and just behave like adults. Because, as you have seen, when I allow my bad side to come out (especially if I feel it is warranted) I let loose. If you feel you have done no wrong, so be it. You want to discuss things on a civilized level, you know very well I can do that without breaking a sweat. It is obvious that we are at opposite ends of the spectrum, so you present your case and I will present mine. But please don't expect for me abandon my beliefs, at this stage of the game, that ship has sailed. Nor would I expect that from you.

I have learned to accept that in this world people will disagree, that is part of life, but please don't insult my intelligence and I will do the same for you and Sig. It is ridiculous that a grown person cannot accept that others have thoughts and opinions all their own, and if anyone feels that they are wrong, well have your say then. But insulting someone's intelligence or right to say what they will, well that strikes me as anti-freedom and free will.

I agree. Hillary has stumbled ever since the DNC convention and
is now trying to regain her stride, but Trump has overplayed his
hand and has stalled his own momentum.

The Debates, if he doesn't chicken out, will be an interesting
next stage of the final campaign push. I will bet the house that
he will make a shambles of the proceedings and steadily falter in
the heat of the pressure. He will offer up nothing, as per usual,
and give pause to those still "undecided."

Hillary's got to present her case as to why she should be in the
White House, but also "step on Donald's neck" and keep up the
pressure of his total lack of political experience.....and I'm
not talking about political correctness, but political knowledge.
She needs to expose him for what he is, a charlatan in sheep's clothing.

The Nazi Who Originated Donald Trump Jr.’s Skittles Analogy Was Hanged at Nuremberg

https://twitter.com/DonaldJTrumpJr/status/778016283342307328

The concept dates back at least to 1938 and Julius Streicher's children’s book called Der Giftpilz, or The Toadstool, in which a mother explains to her son that it only takes one Jew to destroy an entire people.

Hitler said about Julius Streicher: “Now that Jews are known for what they are, nobody any longer thinks that Streicher libeled them.”

Streicher was hanged at Nuremburg in 1946 for crimes against humanity. Did he run a concentration camp? NO! It was very simple what he did to deserve hanging as explained in the court's death sentencing: "week after week, month after month, he infected the German mind with the virus of anti-Semitism, and incited the German people to active persecution."

After more than a year of candidate Trump, Americans are almost desensitized to each new failing exhumed from his past—the losing schemes and cheapskate cruelties, the discrimination and misogyny—much as they are to the daily indecencies of the present: the malice toward a grieving mother, the hidden tax records, the birther fiction and other lies. But where, in all that, is much talk of the future?

President Trump’s First Term – His campaign tells us a lot about what kind of Commander-in-Chief he would be.

Trump aides are organizing what one Republican close to the campaign calls the First Day Project. “Trump spends several hours signing papers—and erases the Obama Presidency,” he said. Stephen Moore, an official campaign adviser who is a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation, explained, “We want to identify maybe twenty-five executive orders that Trump could sign literally the first day in office.”

‘Jane Doe’ Plans to Re-File Sexual Assault Lawsuit Against Trump With ‘Additional Witness’

by Alberto Luperon 12:08 pm, September 16th, 2016

An alleged sexual assault victim is postponing her case against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and disgraced billionaire Jeffrey E. Epstein. Her attorney, Thomas F. Meagher, told LawNewz.com that they’ve filed temporarily dropped the case. On Friday, they filed a Notice of Voluntary Dismissal without prejudice. A new lawsuit will be forthcoming.

“An additional witness has been identified and her declaration will accompany the new complaint,” he said.

The woman, named in court documents as “Jane Doe” is suing Trump and Epstein for allegedly molesting her when she was thirteen. Trump’s attorneys have vigorously denied the claims, even threatening to go after the attorney for filing a frivolous claim.

Hmmmmm, seems only fitting that Trump and his ilk would follow lockstep to the rat-ta-tat-tat of the "Master Race" guns. And to think, I wanted Trump to win so that the "Master Race" could finally shut up. But I think I was
wrongheaded about it all.

Lock them up and throw away the key is the only solution. At least the jihadists are honest about their hatred for America and our culture, but these guys are truly scary.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, the former lieutenant governor of Maryland and daughter of Robert Kennedy, met with the 41st president in Maine on Monday, Sept 19th (who says there’s no American aristocracy?) and posted a picture on Facebook of the two of them, with the caption, “The President told me he’s voting for Hillary!!” She then told Politico that Bush had told her that. Bush had previously said he would abstain from the race. Bush’s spokesman did not deny Townsend’s claim, saying in a statement, “The vote President Bush will cast as a private citizen in some 50 days will be just that: a private vote cast in some 50 days. He is not commenting on the presidential race in the interim.”

The last two weeks have seen the Democrat at a low ebb in polls, and Trump at a peak. That seems to have rattled some Republicans who were content to sit the race out, on the assumption that Trump had no chance of winning: Better to abstain and let Trump fail than take the risk of endorsing a Democrat. But with the race tied or nearly tied with 50 days out, some Republicans seem to be getting antsy. ---

They are not opposing Trump because of policy differences. Trump wants the end of Obamacare and low taxes on high incomes as much as any famous Republican politician. It is the problem of Trump's character and what happens to the GOP's future after Trump. The GOP is content with trading the White House back and forth between themselves and the Democrats. The USA inevitably needs a rest from Republicanism after a Nixon or a Bush 43, but a Trump #1 might be the last Republican in the White House after his silly and high-spirited mischief as President. The GOP has been around for centuries and they would like to still be electing Presidents for a few more decades after Trump, who could ruin the party's reputation.

Trump charity pays to settle his business lawsuits

Donald Trump spent more than a quarter-million dollars from his charitable foundation to settle lawsuits that involved the billionaire’s for-profit businesses, according to interviews and a review of legal documents.

Those cases, which together used $258,000 from Trump’s charity, were among four newly documented expenditures in which Trump may have violated laws against “self-dealing” — which prohibit nonprofit leaders from using charity money to benefit themselves or their businesses.

In one case, from 2007, Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club faced $120,000 in unpaid fines from the town of Palm Beach, Fla., resulting from a dispute over the height of a flagpole.

In a settlement, Palm Beach agreed to waive those fines — if Trump’s club made a $100,000 donation to a specific charity for veterans. Instead, Trump sent a check from the Donald J. Trump Foundation, a charity funded almost entirely by other people’s money, according to tax records.

In another case, court papers say one of Trump’s golf courses in New York agreed to settle a lawsuit by making a donation to the plaintiff’s chosen charity. A $158,000 donation was made by the Trump Foundation, according to tax records.

The Dallas Morning News Is Paying Dearly For Endorsing Hillary Clinton
www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/the-dallas-morning-news-is-paying-dear
ly-for-endorsing-hillary-clinton/ar-BBwpr8u?ocid=spartanntp

The Dallas Morning News is paying a steep price for endorsing Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, in the form of canceled subscriptions and loud protests.

The endorsement broke a 75-year streak in the paper’s history of endorsing Republicans, and generated a lot of reader pushback in the form of angry comments and vows to unsubscribe from the paper. Texas hasn’t gone Democrat in a presidential election in 40 years.

“Certainly we’ve paid a price for our presidential recommendation,” Dallas Morning News editor Mike Wilson said. “But then, we write our editorials based on principle, and sometimes principle comes at a cost.”

The editorial acknowledges what the paper calls Clinton’s “warts.” “But they pale in comparison to the litany of evils some opponents accuse her of. Treason? Murder? Her being cleared of crimes by investigation after investigation has no effect on these political hyenas; they refuse to see anything but conspiracies and cover-ups. We reject the politics of personal destruction. Clinton has made mistakes and displayed bad judgment, but her errors are plainly in a different universe than her opponent's.”

Her Republican opponent Donald Trump is an unacceptable choice for president.

“Trump’s values are hostile to conservatism,” the editorial board wrote. “He plays on fear — exploiting base instincts of xenophobia, racism and misogyny — to bring out the worst in all of us, rather than the best.”

Trump has promised to either alter or abandon the Paris climate agreement if elected.

On Tuesday, Stephen Hawking and 374 other prominent scientists issued a personal plea to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump: Don’t back out of the Paris climate agreement.

Doing so could have “severe and long-lasting” consequences for global climate and US credibility, warns an open letter penned by members of the National Academy of Sciences, including 30 Nobel laureates.
http://responsiblescientists.org/

Trump’s approach reflects a broader GOP strategy when it comes to energy talks: ambiguity. Many Republican politicians do not often specifically mention climate change by name, instead focusing on US energy independence and the economic impact of such deals. That strategy has been employed by other GOP heavy-hitters such as Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, who are reluctant to make economic changes to combat climate change.

Yet more and more Americans recognize the reality of climate change, making outright denial more politically risky.

If Trump wins the election and the accord is not ratified by inauguration day (has 48%, needs 55%), he could try to revoke US participation. Technically, he could stall climate progress even if the deal is set before then – but the agreement's drafters may have predicted such a scenario: written into one article is a requirement that any nation wishing to withdraw first wait for four years, exactly a US President’s term in office.

Ultimately, it may not matter all that much even if Trump does bail on the Paris accord, some experts say. The US is already on track to meet its promises under the deal, since an increase in natural gas use has displaced industrial coal and reduced emissions.

“He might go back on the agreement in Paris but the net effect for the US is not likely to make much of a difference, if at all, in terms of our trajectory,” an anonymous White House official told the Guardian in May.
