The clasps you found are neat enough, but if it were me, I'd hold out for something closer to the real thing. I'm weird that way, though, so you may want to not listen to me.

In the remote chance that you don't know, Abbyshot Custom Clothiers ( www.abbyshot.com) is working on an unofficial official replica of Mal's brown coat. They've been looking for sources of buckles for at least a few months now, so it looks like you're not the only one who can't find anything close.

I believe the original clasps on Mal's coat were completely custom made, so chances of finding something close are slim. I had to make my own for my coat; looked at a whole lot of pictures and sculpted my replicas. If I had some free time at work, I could use our machine shop to create metal replicas, but free time is non-existant at the moment.

True, the AbbyShot coats are on the pricey side, but I don't think the Browncoat will be TOO horrible.

Consider: Their "normal" (read: cloth) coats are roughly $400-$600, depending on what model you're getting. The leather coats, on the other hand, are closer to $1000-$1200. The Browncoat will not be either of these, but rather suede.

Now, I haven't got any experience with leather or suede coats (yet!), but I'm told that suede is significantly cheaper than real leather. So...my prediction is the $800-$900 range.

Just a guess, of course...but here's hoping!

swade is real leather though you can get very good fake swade but by the looks of abbyshot they will use real stuff

when i get a chance i will be makeing buckles for mals coat depending on how much interest there is i may then get them manufactured out of metal at atleast a sturdy plastic(nylon)
