CRACKERS

I have been reading the thread ‘I don't Care What You Believe...Just Believe’
in Troll Country, and I’m saddened to hear that some of my fellow Browncoat’s experience with Christians has been so negative. A lot of denominations group themselves under the umbrella of Christianity, so I think one thing needs to be clarified here, that is, what makes a person Christian? A Christian is one who believes and FOLLOWS the teachings of Jesus Christ. Just because a person goes to a church every Sunday it no more makes them a Christian than sitting in a parking garage makes me a car.

If people would indulge me I have a short tale I would like to share.

A homeless man went to a Christian church one Sunday to get some help as he had not eaten for some time. He thought the people inside would help and although frightened, he plucked up the courage to go in. Upon entering the foyer he was greeted by an usher who promptly put him out. The man was ejected because his clothes were tattered and filthy, his hair was knotted and unkempt, and he stank. Very despondent the man sat on the steps out the front and began to cry. Suddenly, Jesus was sitting next to him and asked, “Why are you crying?” The man replied, “I went in there to get help but they won’t let me in on account of my appearance and I smell.” Jesus then said to the man, “Oh I wouldn’t worry about that, I’ve been trying to get in there for years and they won’t let me in either.”

Jesus taught, “If you love me you will obey my commandments.” What are His commandments? Jesus simply summed them in, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, as I have loved you… By this all will know that you are my disciples… ” (Gospel of John, chapter 13 verse 34). If a Christian’s motive, for everything they do, is not based in love then they have completely missed the mark.

In the Book of James it says, “Faith without accompanying evidence is dead.” (James, Chapter 2, verse 17) The Apostle Paul, wrote in his letter to the Christians in the city of Corinth, “If I speak with human eloquence… reveal all His (God’s) mysteries… have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t have love I have gotten nowhere. So no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.” (I Corinthians, chapter 13, verses 1through 7) He then proceeds in the rest of the chapter to describe unconditional love.

Although a person may call themselves a Christian, may belong to a denomination, If they do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and walk in love, they themselves are NOT Christian.

Jesus himself is all about one thing – “Love”!

On behalf of those Christians who have offended you and caused such disdain, I would like to apologise and say sorry.

Regards, Tim (aka Crackers).
