IT professional, work for the Alliance(US Goverment). In the Operations Dept. we still have large mainframes (5) and tape drives and printers.
I work at night, and I get to play on the PC, and go to all the FF sites, not a bad job...

Good luck with the English teaching, Sassi! I hope to do something like that someday.

I'm an IT Trainer. I teach adults how to use computers, from basic computers for the over 55's to Microsoft Office Specialist exams and all the fun stuff in between. I specialise in teaching older adults who are nervous of technology. Hence the name Desktop Hippie. Cuz I promote peace and harmony with your PC.

Geddit? Geddit?

During the summer I teach English as a Foreign Language to kids visiting Ireland for the season.

I worked in office jobs for many years, but finally made the leap to teaching about a year and a half back. I'm a lot happier with this job, although since my boss has me helping her run the company I'm sort of back in office work again!

I work in the office of a high end furniture store. Processing the special orders and tracking them with the manufacturers, making sure the designers get proper commissions, and making sure the import of (mainly) Italian leather furniture goes smoothly. Which it never does.

Corporate lawyers aren't necessarily evil. They're just... amoral. When I was in private practice, I was guided by professional ethics requirements, but aside from those I really wasn't supposed to think about good and evil or justice or consequences for the human beings involved or anything like that. I was a flunky, and it was my job to help rich people get richer by making sure their contracts were well-written and well-structured and would stand up to a court's scrutiny in the event of later litigation between these rich people.

I've mentioned in other threads that I think there are a lot of similarities between the practice of corporate law and the work of a Companion. You get to dress really snazzy and hobnob with the rich and powerful and go to all their parties, and the rich and powerful are very complimentary to your face about how much they value you. But the fact is, you're a service provider; they are paying for your time and attention, and you have a job to do pretty much anytime you're with them.

Oh, and the other similarity -- the polarity of reactions when you tell people what you do. There seems to be general distaste for the professions among the people who don't use those kinds of services, and yet those same people seemed generally impressed when they find out you're one of them.

Oh, well. That's all behind me. Now that I work for the government, I'm on the side of the good guys... right? Right? :)

I'm a medical transcriptionist and also have my own small biz selling stuff on my website and also feePay.

Steamer, about twice a year we get a steam train loaded with tourists through our town! It never stops, but I can usually - USUALLY - hear it coming in time to dash out there with a camera. I have yet to figure out their schedule. It follows the line up the west bank of the Mississippi, not sure how far.

I'd love to take a ride on that train.

Huh. Good thread. And such a wide diversity of jobs, too! Gee, I guess Firefly does reach across all sorts of boundaries, doesn't it? So why, why, why, did it get cancelled?!?
*ahem*
Sorry.
Ok, job...for cashy money and the enjoyment of job satisfaction (I am not kidding...I really do love my job), I am an Insurance Agent. Everything from small personal accounts up through huge commercial...my main area of "handling" is bonds; probate, estate, etc. Not bail bonds. Totally different ball of wax.

For fun, I design and build costumes and armor, mostly from the Renaissance period. Lately, though, I have been doing quite a number of Firefly costumes!

Hehe... if you say so girl.

I can't say too much about it though. I work with credit card companies so I'm putting food in my mouth and money in the bank and the 'ol 401k while working for the alliance myself. It's very impersonal for the most part though, so I think of it more as being the guy in the bunker who pushes the red button instead of being one of the ones on the frontlines. It helps me sleep at night anyways.

My dream is to save enough by the time I'm 40 to buy some land in the middle of nowhere, learn how to raise crops and livestock and find me a little lady that I can settle down with... far away from computers, politics, illegal search and seizures, traffic cameras and lawyers.

Ahhhhhhhh.... dreams.

Shininess! I think I know the group that runs those trips. If I don't miss my guess, you can probably get some info at http://www.milwaukee261.com (I'm pretty sure that's the only group that operates steam in your area). Did you know that you had a couple of imported Chinese steam engines blasting through there at the end of the summer? What I wouldn't give to fire/run one of those bad boys someday.

Semi-retired teacher. I taught little ones: kindergartners, 1st graders, and 2nd graders for years. I retired last June, but I did manage to get a part time job for this year. I knew I would miss working with the students if I totally stopped teaching. I work with young children with an online reading program. I get all the fun parts of the job, and I don't have any of the yucky parts.

Hey, now that sounds like a great kid! I work out of New Hope, PA. I don't know if that's too much of a hike for you to make it at all this week, but we've got our Polar Express trains running now till Sat. night, if your son wants to see Santa. Ooh, I almost forgot -- our 3-year-old is a Browncoat, too. At least, he's always asking to see the opening credits, the shot in the pilot where Inara is flying her shuttle, and the swordfight in Shindig. And he can sit through a few minutes at a time of any other scene I'll let him watch.

Mind you, it's starting to get a little tricky. Explaining away the guns, punching and swords has been fairly easy: "We never fight for real. We never hit people, we never shoot people, we never use swords. They're just pretending on TV." But he's started asking, when characters appear, whether they are "good guys" or "bad guys". And I really don't know what to say half the time.

Antiquarian Book and Paper Restoration.

I get to clean and repair all manner of stuff.

Some of the neatest things I have seen come thru our
workshop :

The Annapolis Academy Museum's collection of Robert Fulton's
papers - including the patents and designs for his first
steam engines.

A booklet on the rules of baseball, very early -
if memory serves I think it was 1869.

Original edition of Vesalius' Anatomy Book,
from the 1500's I believe.

But the best so far :

A sketchbook attributed to Henri de Champlain,
the explorer. Filled with notes and small watercolor
drawings of plants and animals from an expedition.
That one was insured for over $1M.

Would not trade my job for anything

Right now I work for a distance learning high school. (Think homeschooling, but an accredited 4yr. HS). I grade drawing, photography, and literature course work. I also write curriculum -- the study guides that go along with the textbooks our students use. Just finished the photography study guide as a free-lance job so --finally!-- I can say I'm a professional writer, at least part time.

Before that I worked in a library, at a garden center, and in retail. Once I helped demonstrate Tai Chi. And, for one brief shiny moment o'time, I was in a rock band.

I, too, envy Steamer and Vonbrumback their jobs!

I am a Science Specialist at a science museum. This means I get to play with the public and teach them all about everything from dinosaurs to astronomy. I'm also in charge of our brand new demo stage's huge Smartboard (basically a really big interactive computer screen)...which is funny because I'm not really a computer person, but since I'm the young recent college grad, everyone has assumed I know what I'm doing so I get to teach our *ahem* older volunteers (seriously, one of them turned 90 last fall!) how to use it.
