Grasshopper 744m Test | Single Camera (Hexacopter)
Published on Oct 12, 2013

On Monday, October 7th, Grasshopper completed its highest leap to date, rising to 744m altitude. The view above is taken from a single camera hexacopter, getting closer to the stage than in any previous flight.

Grasshopper is a 10-story Vertical Takeoff Vertical Landing (VTVL) vehicle designed to test the technologies needed to return a rocket back to Earth intact. While most rockets are designed to burn up on atmosphere reentry, SpaceX rockets are being designed not only to withstand reentry, but also to return to the launch pad for a vertical landing. The Grasshopper VTVL vehicle represents a critical step towards this goal.

Grasshopper consists of a Falcon 9 rocket first stage tank, Merlin 1D engine, four steel and aluminum landing legs with hydraulic dampers, and a steel support structure.

Ahh... cool vids.

Thanks bunches.

Is amazing how we've progressed so far in technology that we've actually achieved 1950's sci fi level of getting rockets to land vertically.

Mr Musk, who had become the richest person in the world with a current estimated personal wealth of $271bn (£201.6bn), was called out by Twitter users who said his tweet was “excessive”.

Brian Altano, a video producer, said Mr Musk could “even pay a little every month, like how you pay your child support.” Musk is well known for dumping his many children, wives and girlfriends.

This New Yorker profile of Elon Musk is supposed to present him as some kind of supervillain. Read closely, and you'll see one example after another of how the regulatory state hinders progress.

Story 1: FAA tries to stop a SpaceX launch because some windows might get blown out if the rocket explodes. Couldn't the company just afford to cover the windows if it happened and reimburse the homeowners, well beyond what those windows were worth? I guess not. Must scrape the whole thing! The rocket did end up exploding, but no windows were damaged.

Story 2: Tesla is forced to do a recall because their automated software permitted people to roll through stop signs at 6 MPH. As the company points out, people do it all the time. Who cares? But it violates the rules! Recall all humans too, they might roll through stop signs.

Story 3: Tesla wants to replace care engine noises with farts or whatever the driver chooses. Not allowed. No reason even given for this one. There's just a regulation somewhere I guess which says cars can only go vroom vroom?

Throughout their interviews, government officials talk about the need to create a "safety culture." I noticed that this phrase was used independently by one person from FAA and one from the Department of Transportation. It must be a thing all bureaucrats say, not just specific to the lingo of one agency.

What a revealing phrase! Safety is not something you consider in terms of costs and benefits. It's the entire culture. Try to accomplish great things, there will be risks. At what point are regulators doing more harm than good? Everything from this piece seems to indicate that we crossed that line long ago.

Thankfully there are still men out there willing to push through. We owe them a lot.
