Kaylee couldn’t believe it. A job. A real-life money-payin’ job. Lurks and perks and a whole ship hers to look after. It was her dream come true. A bonafide Firefly ship engine all at her fingertips. It was all coming together, she thought, running back to the workshop. She had to pack her bags tonight!!! It was so exciting. It was brilliant. She was leaving home and going into the middle of No and Where.
She was leaving home, Kaylee stumbled slightly. Home, her father, her mother, the workshop, everyone. Kaylee slowed down to a walk. She was only metres away from the house. She could see her dad working in the shed, her mum through the window in the kitchen stirring something on the stove. Could I leave all of this? Kaylee wondered. What will Dad do without me in the workshop? Will Mum be okay?
Kaylee stopped, dropped to the sidewalk. How can I say goodbye to my home?

Kaylee sat on the sidewalk. She didn’t know what to do. The job was hers and she had accepted it, with no qualms. Why was she feeling like this? The thought of being out of the Core and in the middle of deep space had its enticements. But the thought of leaving home scared her to the bone. Her father had begun to depend upon her work to keep the customers happy. If she left who would carry that load?
And her mother… a hand dropped on her shoulder. Kaylee jumped and looked up, it was her mother. “Kaylee, what are you doing just sitting out here?” she asked as she sat down beside her daughter. Kaylee leaned over and rested her head on her mother’s shoulder. “Oh, Ma, I agreed to somethin’ and now I don’t know whether I should do it.” “Well, what is it hon?” Kaylee took in a deep breathe, “it’s a job Ma, on a ship. A paying job as a ships’ mechanic and I gotta leave tonight.” “I see. And you told the Captain of this ship that you’re the mechanic for the job, and he agreed. Well, I guess, you’ll be leaving us and saying goodbye.”
Title: The Suitcase Author: bookishtype Fandom: pre-Firefly – related to “Out of Gas” Rating: G Characters: Kaywinnett Lee Frye
Kaylee sighed, she had managed to fit her entire life into a suitcase. And a trunk. And her toolbox. Still that was her whole life. Sitting there just waiting for a new home. A new place to call her own. It was mind-blowing and mind-boggling at the same time.
“Well I guess this is it”, Kaylee spoke to the living room. Her mother smile softly and came over to embrace her. “You will be the best mechanic there ever was out in space, hon.” Kaylee smiled and hugged her mother tighter.
Her father had loaded up the ute with Kaylee’s gear and stood waiting at the passenger door. Kaylee bounded up the footpath to her father. “Thanks Dad.” Kaylee smiled at her old man. Her father smiled, and pulled out a wrench from his overall’s pocket. “This here, is my all time best ever wrench. It fits absolutely every nut, bolt, screw you can get out in the darkness. And I am giving it to you, baby girl.” Her father’s eyes glistened.
“Thank you, Dad”, Kaylee replied softly, as she took the wrench from her fathers’ hand. Then she leaned over and kissed him on the cheek, “Love you Daddy, goodbye”.
