In the lines of Dido's White Flag

CATEGORY: FILK    TIMES READ: 3520    RATING: 8    SERIES: FIREFLY

I was listening the song not long time ago and it made me think of Mal and Inara.

There's a sentimental touch in the song that may make you think it doesn't looks like something Mal would say...

Well... the I love you's in the song are all tinted with sorrow and dispair, so I thought it fits. And he is not singing it out loud, of course, more of an inside stream of brooding.

Sung by Mal.

White Flag

I know you think that I shouldn't still love you,

I'll tell you that.

But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it

where's the sense in that?

I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder

Or return to where we were

Well I will go down with this ship

And I won't put my hands up and surrender

There will be no white flag above my door

I'm in love and always will be

I know I left too much mess and

destruction to come back again

And I caused nothing but trouble

I understand if you can't talk to me again

And if you live by the rules of "it's over"

then I'm sure that that makes sense

Well I will go down with this ship

And I won't put my hands up and surrender

There will be no white flag above my door

I'm in love and always will be

And when we meet

Which I'm sure we will

All that was then

Will be there still

I'll let it pass

And hold my tongue

And you will think

That I've moved on....

Well I will go down with this ship

And I won't put my hands up and surrender

There will be no white flag above my door

I'm in love and always will be

Well I will go down with this ship

And I won't put my hands up and surrender

There will be no white flag above my door

I'm in love and always will be

Well I will go down with this ship

And I won't put my hands up and surrender

There will be no white flag above my door

I'm in love and always will be

i respectfully disagree. in my opinion, dido's song is about losing the one you love and being unable to admit that you miss them or want them back or that it hurts. the best lines that say this are when she talks about the inevitable meeting between herself and her old love. she sings "i'll let it pass and hold my tongue. and you will feel that i've moved on." she means she wants her outward appearance to show that she is completely over him. i feel that this does not really apply to mal and inara since they have never confessed their love to each other and have not been together and then separated. just like the old saying, you cannot lose what you never had.

just my humble opinion.

in case you did not already know, the music video for that song has david boreanaz in it as dido's ex! how is that for six degrees?!

TENTHCREWMEMBER

Actually, I'd say it fits perfect then. Since Mal effectively "loses" Inara since they can never admit their feelings for eachother. Mal is always biting his tongue, and he does want to go down with his ship. Sure you have to extrapolate from the lyrics a bit, but mostly it works. If one was so inclined, some simple lyric changes make this totally a song for Mal and Inara.

Just my respectful disagreement with the respectful disagreement. ;)

GLOWYRM

"im in love and always will be"

you cant half tell that this song should have been an "internal duologue"
switching between Mal and Inara...

+camera follows Mal around the ship while stanzas 1-5 and 8 are internaly sung+
+camera follows Inara around her "parlour" touching things here and there for stanzas 6-7+

then as the last stanza (or final yearning chorus) camera switches back and forth between the two, both internaly singing until right before the last line when they meet, face to face, in the galley they would look deep into eachothers eyes to internaly sing "im in love and always will be"+

the camera would then fade to black...

and no, im not a romantic, i just understand unrequitedd love.

Hard to see, but somehow I just imagined Jayne, Book, Wash and River making the chorus. Yep, no chorus, but imagine there were one...

I have to side with tenthcrewmember on this one, it's Dido wrote this song was written for Mal and Inara. Highly applicable. Which lyrics did you change? I'm not familiar enough with the original to be able to tell.

I didn't change any lyrics.

I could have adusted it a little bit better, yet I liked the song this way, maybe the words don't fit 100%, but the feeling I have everytime I hear it, does.

I really liked glowyrm's scene directions. That'd make a cute music video. Jayne Book Wash and River in chorus...that just makes me laugh. Just the thought of them standing around acting like the chior... so funny. I think the song's pretty applicable. Very cute.
