Sketch - Mal & Zoe
Wednesday, May 7, 2008

I continue dabbling in the "art" of tracing characters of Firefly to understand how they work. I know and completely agree that tracing images isn't really that tough or artistic but it surprises me how tough it is to make the characters look like themselves.I hope no one mind... They have been really fun to do and I learn a lot by doing them.

Hey, I think it's great. You have to learn somehow, and it's in knowing what lines to pull out that's the challenge. I like em :o)

Awesome. That's a great way to work on lines and shading. I love that picture too.

Comment feature didn't seem to be working earlier.
Don't apologize for what you do. Art is what it is. If it's fun, keep on doing it and sharing it.
The technique is good, and the likenesses are fine. That's definitely our Zoe, and there's something demonic about that Mal, maybe his chin and eyes.

Art is art. If it looks good, it looks good. Don't worry about being "professional"- what matters is that you have fun with it, enjoy looking at it, and maybe that other people like looking at it too. And I think it looks awesome !

Besides, by choosing the medium of your art, and doing it, you make it yours, no matter what the subject happens to be

Wow. That's REALLY good. I don't even recognise that scene from the movie - did you re-create a scene or are those completely original poses???

Zoe is perfect, and I love the Mal drawing - I agree there is something a little demonic in it, but I think it's the eyebrows! And you've managed to get his eyelashes in ... And go with your art - it's great.

Thank you all for your kind words.

Tracing is a technique that is a little frowned upon because everyone can do it and it isn't very creative. Thing is - it's fun! I can also say I have learned a lot from these kind of sketches and I hope it's ok if I flood this place with a couple of them in the future.

Right now I have been playing around with the thought of doing a series of wallpapers for some of the characters - a cool close up or some dramatic scene... If anyone have ideas, a slogan or a particular scene they think would be cool you are more than welcome to come with input :)

Tracing in general may be looked down upon but this isn't your average tracing. Usually tracing is the simplest of line drawings. You have layering and shading in here.

Very cool

The final portrait in this series for now. Now this guy is so thankful to draw. I love his face! Older people are more interesting and easier to draw because their faces usually have more character and more to work with in general. / Sketch traced after screencap in Photoshop. Also used a water color brush from BittBox and concrete and rust textures from CG Textures.

Damn, this girl is hard to get right. I am not very happy with this one but I will let it go anyway. I need to draw something else for a while... / Sketch traced after screencap in Photoshop. Also used a water color brush from BittBox and concrete texture from CG Textures.

I am having a bit too much fun with these traced drawings right now. I probably just have a couple of more and then I will have it out of my system. I made another (traced) sketch. I was bored and felt I needed to do something with a little contrast and color.
