What is a Hero?
Wednesday, January 3, 2007

Just a random little poem that I wrote. I guess you could interpret it as Firefly-related, but it's not really.

What is a hero?

Is he a man called Hercules?

Or is he a saint down on his knees?

What is a hero?

Is she a girl with no fear?

Or is she a woman who wipes away tears?

What is a hero?

Is he a tall man standing strong?

Or is he a little boy who knows right from wrong?

What is a hero?

Is she a warrior fighting hard?

Or is she a girl who protects those she loves from harm?

Heroes come in many forms

Tall and strong, rough and worn

Only some are truly real

They can teach us how to feel

Only some are truly true

Only some care about me and you

What is a hero?

Is he a movie star?

Or the poor mechanic who fixes your car?

What is a hero?

Is she a mother and wife?

Or is she a soldier who saves a life?

What is a hero?

Is he out on the grid iron?

Or is he in the cage with a lion?

What is a hero?

Is she a pilot in the sky?

Or is she a teacher separating truths from lies?

Heroes come in many forms

Tall and strong, rough and worn

Only some are truly real

They can teach us how to feel

Only some are truly true

Only some care about me and you

What is a hero?

Is he a man in a firefight?

Or is he a man spreading light?

What is a hero?

Is she a writer tapping keys?

Or is she a captain on the seas?

What is a hero?

Is he a man who would give you his life?

Or is he a man with a house and a wife?

What is a hero?

Is she a lead on Broadway?

Or is she a giver in every way?

Heroes come in many forms

Tall and strong, rough and worn

Only some are truly real

They can teach us how to feel

Only some are truly true

Only some care about me and you

What is a hero?

Is he a man who can break down and cry?

Or is he a man who holds in it and lets out a sigh?

What is a hero?

Is she a woman fighting a storm?

Or is she a nurse helping new ones be born?

Heroes are what we make them to be

Heroes are different for you and me

We choose who we keep inside

We choose who stays and who hides

We choose our heroes

What is a hero?

What is a hero?

What is a hero?

What is a hero?

Ohhhhhhhh

What is a hero?

I loved it. The paradoxes, the dichotomies. You hit the nail on the head, several times. We choose our own heroes, those who inspire us.

Here's a man with a house and a wife.

"It ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need."

Very nicely done. I would pretty much classify this as Lyric Poetry; Do you have a melody concept for it, or is it more Rhyming Poetry, in your opinion? EWither way, it's very effective!
