Thoughts in the Black
Saturday, July 13, 2013

It's interesting I went from thinking, as a kid, that Star Wars was the end all be all of my fandom, to being a general fan of gaming for a great many years, though not overly fanatical, until Firefly came along and awakened my inner geek...the hardcore one. The one that ensures that everyone I know understands (even if they don't appreciate) my love of all things Firefly.

I've always loved good stories, westerns, and sci-fi. Firefly was the harmonic convergence of all three of these. While I always enjoyed other Joss products, Firefly was the one that resonated. It still does. It has become a life changing event for me. It started me on a hobby, which then started me on a business venture, and has now pushed me to change my life entirely by going back to school (recently got my Associate's in Graphic Design...moving on to Bachelor's now!) and hunting down, dare I say it, a real job!

In that vein, sad to say that the Space Bazaar is all but empty these days, thanks to F*X lawyers...but damn, what a run. Over 8 years I smuggled goods to Browncoats around the world. That's a mighty fine feeling. And it was only possible due to the support of my fellow Browncoats who supported me. Heck, even picked me up when I couldn't crawl another step. I sometimes ponder where my life would be now, without Firefly, without Browncoats...and I can only figure I'd still be wandering the Black of existence not knowing what I was meant to do. You kept me flyin'.

Now it hasn't all been fun and games *WARNING! SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION!*(though you can still download those for free! http://jonathan.kc8onw.net/TCM%20Firefly%20Games/). It has been hard work, a lot of sleepless nights, but the reward of the joy you all bring me in return pays back my efforts tenfold. But there have been some (all local) Browncoats who have lost the spirit and nearly ruined my experiences for me. I no longer participate or engage with them, but thankfully my GLOBAL Browncoat experience, especially here, on Fireflyfans.net, has been more than I could have ever hoped for. The online community here is the best I've ever seen anywhere, the fans are the greatest (for reasons we all know!), and the show still lives on today because of both.

I can never say it enough, but I owe so much to this community (more than just my Caption Tightpants game (oh look, another shameless plug)), and I feel privileged that I am but a small part of what is a very special and shiny crew.

Thank you, Karel. Life keeps me busy, but yes, better late than never! ;)
Gonna try and be less of a stranger if I can (okay, less not-around...can't help but be stranger lol!)

Hi! Bytemite, my enthusiasm rolls like a wave, but like a boat on the ancient sea, Firefly is my home. Making acquaintance with you and all the other Browncoats has always been, and continues to be, the thing that resonates most with me: The most amazing community (family) I have ever known.

Good to hear from you, TCM! Firefly was my first fandom ever. At age 40. Better late than never? :-)

BYTEMITE

Hi! I had a similar experience as you did, from Star Wars to games then to Firefly. But those were really pale comparisons to what I felt for Firefly, and which I still feel, though time has sapped some of my enthusiasm. But it is still the best tv show and movie I've ever seen, and yes, life changing.
