Doctor Horrible as a passionate artist.
Thursday, April 14, 2011

I've realized from the start that part of the fun of Doctor Horrible was how Horrible was portrayed as a wanna-be evil genius, trying to break into 'the big League', but it was only after reading through some of the script in the official companion, that the way he approaches his life's work seems to be like the outlook of many young creative artists that I know. He's hungry for success, recognition, and fame, yes, but he's also into "evil for evil's sake." (Without hurting kids, of course.)

Some of the little bits that had particular significance to my own writer's journey at the moment were his enthusiasm over his strong application to the Evil League of Evil... "Letter of condemnation from the Deputy Mayor, that's gotta count for something", and the little exchange with Moist...

Doc: I've got a Ph. D. in Horribleness!
Moist: Is that the new catch-phrase?
Doc: Huh? Oh, I'm workshopping it. There are a few... anyway.

Myself, I've been obsessing a lot lately about applications to six-week summer writing workshops down in the states. I'm on the wait-list for Odyssey, so wish me good luck with that!

And as a somewhat random bit, when I went to the Doctor Horrible group sing-along in Toronto last fall, one of the items in the little goody bag was a copy of the first response from the city to Doc's request for a letter of condemnation - which at first they'd mistaken for 'request for a letter of commemoration', which was really very funny.
