Spinning Out is finished...Chapter 6 Posted!

My fanfic, Spinning Out, is now complete. It was a 46,000 word endeavor that I'm quite pleased with. I will soon begin outlining the second arch of stories.

Chapter 6: The Deep End was divided into 2 parts because it was 13,500 words long. Some things that contributed the length:

1) Exploration of Jayne. Throughout the story Jayne was just delivering one liners while the other characters were involved with conflicts and developeing. I saw a unique opportunity to explore 2 separate conflicts involving Jayne. One was with Mal and the other was with Simon. And these conflicts are very interesting in that they involve concerns that are the exact opposite of each other. Where life and death are concerned Jayne finds himself in agreement with Simon more than Mal. Where manners and etiquette are concerend Jayne is in direct conflict with Simon. I sort of stumbled upon this revelation in Chapter 4. After inserting a dining scene that was intended for Chapter 5 I knew I had to take Jayne in this direction...I hope people like it.

2) "Drink! Drink! Drink!" It has become apparent to me that there is a lot of drinking going on in my story. Not all of it is alcohol. Bits of dialogue are brought to life with sips off coffee and tea. The dangers of desert life are punctuated with the need for water. And yes, the crew likes to belly up to the bar to at least give their many troubles a rinsing (if not drown them). In this chapter the entire crew hits the bar scene of Persephone. But there was a point to it. Monty needed to find Mal and bring him to the underground. For that to happen they needed a reason to stay the night. So Badger can't pay them. Jayne needed to get away from Mal. So I sent him to the other side of the planet. River needed to do something crazy. So I made her a reigning quarters champion. Notice I don't say in the story that she drinks.

3)Original Characters. I introduced and expanded on some characters of my creation. New characters are: Jutta Gudrun, bookish looking underground ringleader. Alfonso, security officer for the underground. Jian Qiaolian, seductive and scary arm twister for the lower chamber of Parliament. I introduced Samuel Ling in the prologue of the story and referenced him through out. In the end of the chapter I think you'll really understand the escense of this character. He sure isn't a good guy but he isn't the worst bad guy. He's a smart pragmatic schemer and right now the Parliament has no new ideas. So they need him.

Ideas for the future:

1) Mal and Inara. Because they are reunited at the end of this story there was little room to explore their relationship. Expect big trouble between them.

2) More action, less crying. It was very neccessary but I am sick of all the angst. Bring on the violence ! My aim is to have some decent action in every chapter of the next story. I believe I will accomplish this by making every chapter a job. In Spinning Out the chapters were separated by the following themes
0 - Return from the Black for work
1 - Land on Persephone to find work
2 - Get to Badger's for a job
3 - Learn the lay of the Verse and negotiate a deal
4 - Go get the loot
5 - Sell the loot
6 - Get paid
I will definetly streamline this proccess. So keeping the crew busy should mean they don't have as much time to cry their little eyes out.

3) River is going to get worse. Not exacty how and when but her mental problems will interfere with her psychic ninja assassin abilities. I think it will be rooted in her lost childhood. Some research will be in order.

4) Badger. Badger will remain a very important part of this story.

5) Alliance. Samuel Ling's designs for the Rim can prop up certain parts of the government but others will crumble.

Those are the thoughts I'm having right now... it might change.
