Need help with song title... by singate

Need help with song title...

...or the band that recorded it. There's is a song I've been hearing on the radio lately but I can't find the title or artist so I'm turning to the browncoat community for help. I've tried going to websites that search via lyric fragments to no avail, maybe the song is too old. I'm pretty sure it's from the 70's but I could be wrong. About halfway through the tone and tempo change, almost feels like two different songs. Here are some of the lyrics:

"The night exploded with a heavy crash as we fell into the sun, and the first man said to the second one there, 'I hope you're having fun'..."

"The jailer man and sailor Sam will search forevermore..."

The chorus sounds like "man on the run" but I might be mistaken.

This has been haunting me for months so any help would be much appreciated.

Thank God someone has the answer! Pitiful that I didn't know it. For some reason I kept thinking it was a Kansas tune. Much appreciated.
