Just ranting about comments
Thursday, July 5, 2007

Just bear with me while I have a little rant ...

I write fanfic. I love comments.

Like everyone else, I adore praise, and it makes my day to see someone has commented on a story of mine, and I do thank each and every one of you who do so.

I even find that if people don't like something that it can make me think again about my story, where it's going and how it's getting there!

It's just that, lately, it seems as if the comments are tailing off. Is it me? Do my stories somehow now suck? Basically, I'm asking - nay, pleading - if you think I'm going wrong, tell me. I may not listen. I may not even agree with you. I could even get violent. But I write Firefly fanfic because I love the show, and I want people to enjoy what I've written.

Well, rant done.

And to those who comment regularly, I love you guys!

I love your stuff whether its for Firefly or Castle but I do tend to leave for the end of the story and not give feedback on each chapter.

Please don't let lack of feedback stop you, you are a brilliant writer. All I get on my fics is "this sucks!" but I still write them.

KATESFRIEND

Just for fun this evening I browsed a fic written in 2004 by SLynn in the BSR. It was read between 700 and 800 times and no one commented on it or rated it until 2006. Don't feel too bad, Jane.

As for me, I'm fairly tolerant in accepting an author's point of reference. I enjoy the creativity and writing skills as much as I enjoy the storyline. But Jayne/River makes me feel squicky, and I can't format a reply properly when my brain is squicky too. So I try to comment when appropriate. And when the BSR virus eats my comments, I hit the back button and resubmit the comment a second time and it usually works. One third of the time it tries to eat my comments but always restores them for the second submittal.

I feel like you have made a deliberate effort to reduce the amount of Freya centeredness in your fics and increased the time with the BDH's. For this I am very appreciative. I enjoy seeing the evolution of the characters very much in your fics. But to change Jayne into someone River could love makes him not be Jayne anymore IMHO.

I've been hearing that the fandom can't last much longer for a long time now, and it just keeps growing...must be a perception versus reality thing. Just have to wait and see what happens.

Yes. I have noticed this! Its going on in my Fanfic too. A couple of times it was people just telling me to fix stuff, which is ok. But aleast tell me what you liked about the thing. *sigh*

Did you see the feedback/deadair/etc thread? You're not the only one. There seems to be a sad but inevitable waning of the fandom going on, at least as far as fic is concerned. There's also the BSR spam virus thing, and the continually disappearing comments, both of which I think made many people shy away from reading and commenting on this site.

Speaking for myself, I left all the feedback I have on your blog a while ago (Naysayers). The thing is - speaking generally here - if Igive someone feedback that what they write isn't my thing, I'm not going to give any more feedback as long as they keep writing on the same topic. That's not to say that anyone should change what they write to fit my tastes; it's just basic logic. You're clearly not writing your story for me, so I'll keep my opinion to myself.

Except... trying to be gentle here... if you get feedback that people see something they don't like in your story (the possible Mary Sue-ness, for example) and your reponse is a staunch defense of your approach and rejection of the criticism, well... of course these people aren't going to comment anymore! Feedback has to be a two way street. Not that you have to cave, but gentle acknowledgement and discussion are better than rants...

Hafta say, I haven't been reading your stuff, lately.
I like your stuff, but what I read is shorter pieces.
Got no knock against folks who have the inspiration to write longer pieces, novels, epics, whatever; they're just not what I read, they're not what I'm in the market for.
There have been a *L*O*T* of longer pieces lately, and not so much of shorter.

You're right - I did ask! It was just me letting off steam more than anything else. Bad day and all that.

So just ignore me!

There could be many reasons comments are trailing off on stories. And I'm sure its not just yours. You're just more sensitive to it because you think its just you:)

It's summer. People are going out more. Firefly fans are going to other shows because nothing new is forthcoming, it could be the content of your stories, it could be that readers get tired of seeing someone constantly asking for feedback. It could be a combination of all of those and more I haven't thought of. I know it is for me.

You asked the question and I felt the need to answer. No insult is intended. But you wanted an answer, whether you liked it or not:)
