Back Stories: fic intro and disclaimers...
Thursday, April 26, 2007

Monday is the day! I will begin posting my new fic, Back Stories. It will come in three books – Book I is 14 long chapters, and I will post 2 chapters a week. Books II and III are still under construction, so there will breaks before posting them. So yes, this fic will be ongoing for quite some time! I’m in no hurry - this is my personal Firefly saga, it is my epic, it is my fic-tome, and I’m telling you now it is likely my last. I must move on with other things! Real life things, things that involve income…

(Any whinging about the posting schedule will result in public lashings, because two chapters amounts to roughly 15,000 words a week – I can’t even estimate how many hours of loving labor they represent. Many, many, many! I can’t just hand it all over in one day! *whip held at the ready*)

As usual for me, the main focus is Mal, with some heavy doses of Zoë and Inara. But the funnest (and most challenging) thing about Book I is that it includes 9 chapters which are single character POV. Yes, one for each BDM. And most contain a little of that character’s history, as I have imagined it to be.

Other info for those who care:

Timing: Back Stories comes after the TV series and my previous fics The Fish Job and Easy Tickets. I rely heavily on these fics, and tie into specific details of them quite a bit. I will include links back to these fics where it seems useful, but if you haven’t read them I highly suggest you do. They are posted here on FFF, also a more heavily edited and slightly changed version is on livejournal. (I shifted one particular detail to fit Back Stories, I’ll clue you Simon fans in on that when necessary.)

Movie canon: There is no movie in my verse… sort of. My general theory goes like this: if Joss had been able to tell his story in a another full season and a half on TV instead of in a movie, he would have made many different decisions as to how that story unfolds. Let’s face it, storylines must fit the medium used to tell them, and taking FF to the big screen necessarily involved many changes, which Joss talks about freely in the movie commentary.

I’m not saying it would have gone the way I’m telling it. In fact, I’m absolutely *sure* it wouldn’t have! But I’m playing it my own way. I keep in mind certain truths that we learned in the movie, but I’m not trying to tie into it.

Pairings: I know some readers are seriously worried about this. If what you want is one character happily/unhappily in a relationship with another, canon or not, you might want to read something else. That’s not what I write.

Where there is romance, purists need not fear. I honor the canon `ships as best I can. Though I may stray slightly, I do so with care, and believable characterizations are always my first priority. My point being – whatever happens in my story, I hope you’ll agree that it’s in character and well justified. And entertaining. ;)

Hoperules - You can't love him more than I do! :p Let's see... Mal has some ups and downs IN BS, but I can't really call him miserable. Exactly. It's tricky...

MSG - LOL! Not long now!

Thank you safeat2nd! BS is more along the lines of Fish Job, as in it stays with the crew, so I think you'll really like it. Yikes is it a lot work to get the characters right though, with a full chapter of each of them!

LeiaSky - you're one to talk about reader torture LOL!

Finally! How long have I been nagging you about this? LOL!

At least I've read some of it already :P

2 chapters per week... you really do enjoy torturing readers. But - that's ok. I understand perfectly. I like to do the same.

Looking forward to Monday!

Mal4prez, I find your characterizations pretty bang-on. In fact I couldn't imagine a second season without The Fish Job. As far as I'm concerned it's canon. I don't read a lot of fics (not a big fan of the "shipping") But this stands out.

I'm struggling right now with a story set in the 'Tween' (in between series and movie) and getting the voices right is damn hard work, so my hat is off to you.

From one Browncoat to another, thank-you.
