So, my mom and I were watching "Safe" tonight (nice coming home to Firefly after I've been away for so long

), and my mom noticed something odd about halfway through.

"How did they know Simon was a doctor?" was her question.

And, that is the question I pose to you: How did the hill folk know that Simon was a doctor?

I apologize if this question has been answered before, and is archived somewhere in a thread from long ago; but, trying to look through all the threads made me sad, and... well, it's late, and I'm lazy. So

Any answer would be appreciated! Thank you!

Well...I think the bushes response is the most logical, but they could have also assumed Simon's shiny clothes indicated a man of wealth and education...probably assumed that all Core-educated people know enough about medicine to heal the sick sufficiently;)

I can't be sure without going back and watching it, but I think there was mention of a "wanted" notice in the town for Simon and River(?).

At the beginning of the episode, Mal calls Simon "Doctor" and the camera shows a shot of the bushes and we hear rustling. They were in the bushes, spying to see if the ship had anything they wanted.

Maybe they assumed since he was dressed so purty, that only an educated man (read Dr.) would be able to dress that way.

i'm gonna go ahead and make a cuple guesses: 1) while in the town (off-screen), simon says something doctor-y. 2)they're listening when mal and co. are unloading the ship (i dont know, not having watched safe recently and now having time to do so now, but i would assume that at some point in that siquence someone calls simon "doc" or otherwise makes reference to his being a doctor. 3) magical farie pixie friends told them
