Can someone tell me what a "beta reader" is?

I'm thinking that it's like a proof reader or something, but I'm not overly sure.

If it is, then does anyone want to do it for me? I have a few fics I want to get posted and someone suggested that I need a "beta reader".

And if a Beta is a proof reader then why do you call it that? I'm confused and not at all very smart when it comes to things like this.

Someone help me please. (pout)

I think the term comes from the computing, Gryffyd. A "beta tester" is someone who is tasked with using a new program or piece of hardware in order to find out all the errors and bugs with it so it can be fixed and released for public consumption.

So...for fanfic, a "beta reader" is the literary version of the above. They go through your fic and just work it to pieces to catch all the minor issues so you can patch it up before "release."

You are correct, a Beta is a proofreader; someone who both corrects your work for spelling and grammar. A good Beta also will give recommendations to make your work flow better, or point out errors in voice or characterization.

If you google "Beta readers" on fff.net, you'll find a thread where people who are available to Beta have posted.
You could also ask someone whose fiction you admire to Beta.
