Why doesn't Zoe where a browncoat?

This is a question that perplexes me. Zoe fought with the Browncoats. She still identifies with them just as Mal does. Why doesn't she wear a shiny suede coat like him? Did he get it cos he was an officer? Wait, he wasn't really an officer. So why's he have and wear one, while she does not? Did she lose hers? Was it ruined in some battle? Why don't we see either of them wearing browncoats in any of the flashback battle scenes?

I feel a fanfic idea coming... Yes, yes. Lesse now...

Well, Zoe was wearing the browncoat in OoG, and if you notice, Mal's coat from the battle of Serenity Valley is not the same as his present coat. It's a much lighter shade. So I'm thinking this coat was more the Dress uniform for him. Maybe the others were forced to surrender their's or somesuch. Seems like the alliance way.

WasN't Zoe wearing a brownish coat in the flashback in OoG? When Mal's first showing her the ship, I distinctly recall a coat flapping behind her.

Maybe she's just not as susceptible to cold as Mal is, so she keeps her coat in the closet.

Joss had that whole American Civil War tie in going and in the American Civil War at first they all had uniforms, but as time went on and supplies ran low they made do with what was available and only about 1/2 ( usually higher ranking officers) had uniforms. The others wore what they had ( usually homespun) and dyed it the correct color. So maybe that's why Zoe only has a vest..or maybe it's that she's moved on:)

I'm with Singate on this one, I don't think The Browncoats had a standard issue coat, so perhaps Mal found his when he joined and Zoe didn't have one when she did. Also, beware, Joss sometimes shys away from questions like the one you're asking, I've seen it happen on a fan video of someone asking a really nerdy BTVS question. Okay, now I'm confused, what were we talking about...

I believe Zoe dosn't wear a browncoat because she accepts the fact that the wars over and shes moved on, where as Mal can't let the fact the Browncoats lost so he is acting as a one man army fighting the Alliance. As for Marty I believe that he just likes the idea of rebelling against the Alliance.

Or it could be that Womens browncoats were not on sale when Mal bought his...... (Train Job)

Well, Mal is wearing a coat in the flashback battle scenes. I'm not sure why she doesn't wear a coat, though she does have her brown leather vest. And Mal was a Sergeant, which is, what? third highest rank? Fourth? I have no idea. Good question, though; why don't they all have coats if they were called the Browncoats? If you ever meet Joss, be sure to ask him!

SINGATE

I don't remember seeing anyone else wearing a coat exactly like Mal's. Even Monty was wearing what looked to be a much lighter shade of brown. Granted his did look as though it had been through some tough times.

My thought on the whole issue is that the Independents weren't formal enough to have a standard issue coat so each person made due with whatever kind of brown coat they could find.
