Upon learning Chinese
Wednesday, May 31, 2006

I borrowed The Joy Luck Club from my local library. Having read the book, I greatly enjoyed the movie. However, I did find myself correcting some of the Chinese translations used throughout the movie. I am hoping that due to the language their are many various translations and that some are used for various purposes, but none the less I found it quite amusing that I would "correct" the subtitles.

The gorram movement has seriously gone to my head...and I love it.

SASSALICIOUS

If Chinese is at all like Vietnamese, the meaning changes depending on the context and other words that are around. And there are multiple mutually unintelligible dialects of Chinese--that could have had something to do with it. Ultimately though, there are some words that just can't be translated very well because people in English speaking land don't have a concept of what it is.

I hate when I start to ramble.
