Something I thought I'd say
Wednesday, April 19, 2006

This is for all the people who are thinking that Nathan Gray is a cold, heartless, evil person. Well, in all honesty, he is. Maybe not so evil as the Operative, but Shepherd Book would certainly have a lecture or seven to give him. I also feel like I need to explain the reasoning behind Gray's killing of the crew of the Russian freighter. First off, he didn't want anyone left over to tell the hunters and/or Navy who/where he was. Second, what would he do with them? If he left them living, he'd have to either keep them on his ship, which he couldn't do for risk of them escaping or some such, or drop them off somewhere, which he couldn't do because they'd go to the authorities. And, something I didn't mention but probably should have: The Russians weren't unarmed. They all had sidearms. And someone mentioned holding them hostage. How would he do that? He would have to contact someone to pay the ransom, which already puts him at risk of being detected. Second, how would he get the money? He wouldn't have a bank account (not a legal one, anyways) that they could just transfer money to, and meeting them to get the money would be too risky. Gray had perfectly legitimate reasons for killing them, you just have to think about it from his point of view.
