My story
Thursday, February 23, 2006

I recently realized that for a browncoat, I am very strange. My first experience with firefly was when it was on tv for the first time. I would sit down and watch it while doing my homework, at least on nights that I was home when it was on. Then it was cancelled, but I really didn't notice that it was. Then serenity hit the theatres and one of my friends told me that there was a firefly movie. That got me thinking "I know I watched firefly, I know I liked it, but I can't remember a thing about it" so I decided to rent the dvds and watch the series again before going to see the movie.

Unfortunately, by the time I had fallen in love with the series again (amazing how everything came flooding back when I saw the opening credits) serenity was no longer in theatres and I had to wait for it to come to dvd so I could rent it. I saw that around Christmas.

It wasn't earth-shattering, and I certainly picked up on the continuity errors (when those that were with me didn't, even though we had just finished watching the series before sticking in serenity), but I think I'm still in shock over

WAIT.... DON'T GO ON IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE!!! IT'S NOT SAFE!!!

SERIOUSLY, DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE SPOILERS

THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE, TURN BACK NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!!

Wash's death. I had accidentally run into a spoiler, so I knew that he died in the movie (Hence the dramatic warnings above), but it still gave me a shock. To go like that...no warning, no nothing, mid-sentance even....I literally felt as if that pole had hit me, especially after the way Zoe reacted. I still can't even THINK of heart of gold without getting all sad now.

After all this, it amazes me that there are browncoats that watched the movie first and still got hooked on the series. It just seems crazy that after seeing (what is currently) the end, that anyone would be able to watch the beginning without tainted eyes.

Anyways, I've gone off topic. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Oh, and as for Wash, I'm actually STILL in denial about his death. And getting hooked on the series is a perfect way to feed that denial. :)

Asarian, okay that makes sense, I guess. River is was pulled me in as well, but I tend to have a thing for shows/movies with psychics.

Hey Rhyianan,

I saw Serenity first. And I had never even heard of FireFly. I hope I can offer you some insight as to why I'm still so hooked on FireFly.

When I had seen Serenity, I was left with a very good feeling. During the movie, I had felt so sad for that beautiful, but troubled young girl we all know as River. And when I saw her lip-sync with the holographic lady at Miranda, seeing her feel everything, I was so happy for her in the end, when I knew she would be okay. Yet, long after the BDM was over, I was left feeling an immense need to give her Love, somehow. Then, doing a quick google search, I discovered that there was a whole series to this, FireFly. In FireFly the puzzle really came together for me, big time. River was so much more vulnerable, and Simon so much more in a better position to show his Love for her, that I realized this entire show is about Love. And in its most beautiful, pure form. I am drawn to that.

So, FireFly really just multiplied the feelings I had in the BDM. Same crew and story line; except the dosage of Love was ten times higher! After I saw Serenity, the episode, I knew I would for ever Love this show. Also, the series is warmer, I think. Not that the BDM is devoid of beautiful (River) moments; because there are plenty of those; but the series, overall, still feels, well, warmer, like I said (cannot think of good other word now). So, for me, the sequence in which I saw the two, BDM first, then FireFly, is just absolutely perfect.

Also, the series, after seeing the BDM first, feels like getting the "fine print", as I said somewhere yesterday, You get to see how the characters came to be with one another, and a little about their background. It is as if someone gently sits you down, and says: "Ok, so you liked this, uh? Well, brace yourself, cuz now we're really going in deep."

And I went deep, as you know. :) But I won't go into that; it appears I have already used up way too much of your private blog space. :( Does that seem right to you? Anyway, I hope my take on things was River-less enough to make a spell of sense.

BillyAnkers:
I understand that many of our ranks saw the movie first and the show second. I don't comprehend how after seeing the movie the show would make as large of an impact.

I for one saw Serenity on my PSP in the UMD format. Never knew there was a T.V. series until I saw the extras on the Serenity DVD. When the movie was over I watched it again and again. Each time I watched it I knew I needed to have more. I bought the Firefly series and watched all the episodes front to back. So, my beginning was the end and my end was the beginning and I for one wouldn't have it any other way. By the way, many professed and hard core browncoats became fans in this same manner.

FOREVERSHINY

I was just as affected over his death as you were. See, I saw the movie in theaters and, you can ask my mom, who I went to go see it with, I started bawling hysterically when it happened. I'm not talking the whole Book's-dead-it's-sad-but-oh-well-he-gave-the-last-words-needed-for-our-hero-to-go-on thing...No, for me, the clinch of the movie was Wash's death.

Anyways, coming back to the topic, you're not alone in thinking that. And I'm curious as to how people can see that and then go back and watch from the beginning.
