Mindless Gushing About the Comic
Tuesday, February 14, 2006

(There be spoilers, I'm sure)

Finally got the trade paperback in the mail the other day, and of course I wasted no time in totally devouring it in one sitting.

First off, I do have a small little gripe or two about a couple of things. Don't think our man Joss is all that used to the medium. Yet. Nothing so that his inner greatness doesn't shine through and nearly blind me in awe, but... couple transitions are a little wonky and it looks like he had a little trouble containing the story within the inherent confines of having to tell a story in so few pages. One or two parts I had to go back through to understand and such, couple transitions were a bit awkward. Sorry, had to get that out of the way ;p Five years in college studying sequential art and all I got out of it was opinionated.

Plus side: It's more Firefly!

It's worth getting the paperback edition for Nathan's intro and the various artists' take on the crew alone. Tim Bradstreet's one of my long-time fanboy idols from way back when he was illustrating RPG manuals, so I really appreciated his rendition of Book.

Not to mention Will Conrad's art. I've always been a little wierded out by seeing Tv shows done in comic form. The characters are never going to look exactly like they do in the show. (Unless you could somehow get each and every cast-member to sit in for reference drawings for every panel...) He does a simply bang-up job in that area though. Wash and Inara being the two that don't QUITE look right. Kaylee's somewhere in between, I think he made her nose a bit too straight and the overalls prolly threw me a bit, but for the most he really captured her. Jayne of course just lends himself to being "comicized". But Mal, River, Zoe and Book are dead on the money. Not to mention the fact that he's a real shiny artist.

Lotta love obviously went into putting this together, and that's generally what I look for in anything. That's what got me hooked on Firefly in the first place.

Also, there's some really touching moments in there. (Here come the spoilers) Didn't catch it the first time through, but there's a panel where Mal is about to talk to Inara and is interrupted by Wash. It floored me when I noticed that in that panel, Mal is standing outside Inara's shuttle, poised to... knock! :P

Nice being able to see some of the gaps between the show and the movie filled in, too. Bishop's leaving really makes sense to me now.

Well... running out of steam. Just felt the need to get that off my chest. Now that I'm hearing there may be more comics in the future, I'm doubly excited. (Still not as good as the series getting up and running again. And it will!!!! :P But still news enough to be excited about.)

Got mine through Amazon.com... haven't been frequenting any comic stores lately, so I don't know how likely it'd be to find it in the shelves. Full title is Serenity: Those Left Behind. I think at amazon it's listed as a paperback IIRC. Amazon's really been quite good a leading me to all the Firefly/ Serenity merchandise, and there's been plenty of fans on there creating lists of all the essentials.

Sounds shiny! Just wondering, where did you get the comic from? I've been trying to find it on the net but I'm stumped. Do you have an ISBN?
