The beginning.

Yes, it all started with my dad. My obsession was begun, fueled and fed by him.

Come December of 2005, I was shopping for Christmas gifts. I had not yet purchased one for him and knew that Serenity was coming out on DVD just before Christmas. I had never seen this movie, which is odd because I make a point to go see new sci-fi movies first-run. But knew that he had seen it and enjoyed it and so I had planned on picking it up at Walmart for their cheap first-week price of under $15. The Sunday before the DVD release, he calls me up.

Dad: "You know, Serenity comes out on video on Tuesday. That'd be a nice gift for Christmas."

DAMNIT!

Me: "Does it really, Dad? Yeah, I think I noticed that. I'll mention it to the others. I think I got you something already." Blatant lie. He ALWAYS does either this or goes and buys himself what you were gonna get him.

Later...

Mom: "Oh, good. You got him Serenity. I picked him up Firefly."

Me: "Firefly? What's that?"

Mom: "You know, the series that Serenity was based on."

You must realize how strange a conversation this second one is. I'm a regular fan of IMDB, a second generation Sci-fi fan (Mom is a Trekkie, I a Trekker and Star Wars Geek), and if I don't see something new, my husband tells me because he's as big a geek as me though he tries to hide it. Heck, I even own a few tapes of Blake's 7! I've seen Doctor Who uncounted times, and could admit to stealing Mom's fanzines. You know, the PAPER ones!

Flashback to 2002. It was not a good year. I had a very severe personal loss that summer and I spent over a year abandoning most relationships, hobbies, and even let my career slide a bit. Come September, I was fighting to become gainfully employed once more and we were making plans to move in with the 'rents to purchase a house. Combined with deep depression, it did not bode well for watching any television. December things were finally picking back up a little and I began to feel like a real person again. But alas, Firefly was already gone.

But how could I have missed it? All these years passed, and I had not even heard of Browncoats or of Firefly in passing. Not a whisper, although my dad claims he mentioned it to me. Perhaps it was because it was on Fox and had a Western feel to it. Perhaps it was because I assumed it was of the vampire persuasion because of Joss' Buffy and Angel (not a fan, sorry :( ). Who knows.

Flash forward to post-Christmas 2005.

Me: "Dad, mind if I borrow your Serenity and Firefly?"

Dad: "Sure, go ahead."

And that was all it took.

I shall soon be shopping for my own Browncoat to wear.
