Vicarious living ...
Sunday, November 27, 2005

If anyone can tell me what my house looks like, I’d LOVE to know!

Yes, I’m in the office again!! It’s Sunday afternoon and its already dark outside and I haven’t had a day off in 3 weeks …

Junior doctors be damned – at least when they work long hours they get the heartfelt thanks of little old ladies, candy from children and everyone’s respect for doing a “sterling job” – What do we lawyers get? That’s right (go to the top of the class), we get the following:

1) The disapprobation of the world. Only estate agents (realtors for you Americans out there) are considered lower on the evolutionary scale (at least here in the UK); and
2) Complaints by our crappy clients that we charge them too much for our services.

Really, I wouldn’t have to be here today, were it not for the inability of the “compliance officer” in my client company to actually COMPLY with UK law – gorramit – the clue is in his job title, for heaven’s sake!!

Anyhoo, rant over…

If anyone would like to describe to me the lovely way they are enjoying their Sunday afternoon (in their own home or out with friends), so that I can live vicariously through them, I would not be averse to reading it!!

Zoot-

I love your blog postings! I just started practicing and it's nic to know that others are suffering out there with me. Worst of all the law leaves no time for following higher callings, like writing fan fic. If misery loves company, then try this: I've been shipped out to a different office to do a big doc review. It will be a month before I see my home again and I might miss Christmas.

Oh and as a side not to JayTee, most lawyers (at least in big firms) have to bill at least 2000 hours a year. Even if you make $100,000 a year, that works out to roughly 50 bucks an hour. Now don't get me wrong, that's still an obnoxious sum of money, but if you factor in how many hours you have to work to make those 2000 billable, then its really more like $30 (US). So by your standards we all (even big firm evil lawyers) deserve at least some sympathy.

Zoot, I can relate. I spent the three straight weeks before Thanksgiving (night, day, etc.) installing the exhibition I had spent months researching and designing. Most people were fairly sympathetic (except upper managment, who believe the exhibits are installed by elves or something), but I also got a lot of, "But your job is fun, so it must not feel like work, right?" Tell that to my back! Oh yeah, and I am salaried, so no overtime!

What's the different between a lawyer and a trampoline?

You take your shoes off to jump on a trampoline!

(Sorry, couldn't help it).

At least you can have fun by putting food colouring in the water cooler.

I usually don't have much sympathy for lawyers, especially here in the United States. It seems that most legislators are also lawyers and that when a law is written it is written in such a way as to require a lawyer to interpret it. I think the reason there is so much latin wording mixed into our legal code is because it's a dead language most people don't speak thus providing a guarantee of steady customers to those who can read it. With some of the better lawyers here in the U.S. making $300 per hour I find it almost impossible to sympathize with them if they have to work on a Sunday. If you make less than the U.K. equivalent of 30 dollars and hour I might have some sympathy. If lawyers want to improve their reputation and gain respect from the masses maybe they could put their talents into rewriting the obfuscated legal code into something that makes sense to the average citizen bound by said legal system.
