Why Firefly was cancelled.
Tuesday, November 8, 2005

A freind recently suggested I check out this series and after I got the first disk from Netflix, I cancelled the others from coming. It was after store hours so I had to wait till the next day before I went and bought the whole series. A week later she and I discussed why it was cancelled and these are the main 3 things we came up with( besides the fact that the Fox people are morons).
1. Lack of advertisement. She nor I had ever heard of it before someone turned her on to it then she did likewise for me.
2. Cost. Sci-fi programs need a much higher budget to produce than the average show because of special effects. Most sci-fi series are geared for a fanbase that starts alot younger; with the adult content there were less fans available for the cost/viewers ratio.
3. Showtime. Friday night for a series that will mainly draw young adults... C'mon, we were all out while this show was on.
Hopefully whenever foxes rites for this show run out it will be picked up by a pay-channel; no comercials and less content restriction would be great. Heck, I'd settle for Fox bringing it back though... Any port when your compression coil is about to bust.

Also, lack of aliens! bielieve it or not! I read the article in Premiere, and one of the reasons given for Fox cancelling Firefly was: NO ALIENS! Heh! heh!

The biggest problem wasn't necessarily lack of advertising but the way the ads were pitched.

I'm a big fan of sci-fi but even I was put off watching Firefly when it was first on TV because it looked - quite frankly - dull and samey: two things this show could never be accused of being.

They're making the same mistake again with the movie, but you can understand the difficulties in selling something that is so hard to pin down.

Also - as much as I love it now - "Firefly" may have been the wrong name for the show. It doesn't really sound that intriguing, does it? "Serenity" may have been better. What do you think?

Hehehee... should we blame Stargate for hogging up a good portion of the Sci-Fi channel? :D

WELCOME!

Don't think you're going to get any arguments from anyone here.

Welcome to the site by the way :)
